Speciality Museums
The ancient shipyard, monument to Amalfi's sea power, is surprisingly well preserved in its unique medieval form. Its impressive elegant architecture, modelled from stone and mortar, consist of two parallel aisles covered by a double series of separate cross-vaults, supported by ten pillars. The museum of the Compass and of the Maritime Duchy of Amalfi documents and illustrates the great history of the ancient Maritime Republic of Amalfi. The museum's collection illustrates the evolution of nautical navigational instruments, among which is the compass, "invented", according to tradition by the Amalphitan Flavio Gioia, in 1302. The compass revolutionized navigation techniques, thereby opening up ocean rautes to the "New World". "The City-State", founded in839, remainded politically independent until 1135. Artefacts and relics represent the fundamental historical factors which permitted and preserved Amalfi's political autonomy, its social progress based on the rule of law and its economic prosperity:. The Translation's body of the Apostle St. Andrew from Constantinople to Amalfi, is re-evoked in a precious miniature of the Pontificalis ad usum ecclesiae salernitanae 492 and by the rare chronicle edited in 1656 by Andrè Du Saussay, Andreas frater Simon Petri deu de Gloria S.Andreae Apostuli. Exhibits of Roman and Medieval sculpture, ancient parchments, codices and manuscripts, statues in tufa, portraits of personages who belongs to the "Mythology of Amalfi", cartographic illustrations of the entity of the Duchy of Amalfi, artistic costumers of merchants and Ladies, knights and sailors, standard bearers and ambassadors, the duke and his bride, created according to the original model-designs of Roberto Scielzo (1955), all enable the visitor to relive one of the most exceptional moments in the history of Italy.

Duomo di Sant'Andrea is a medieval Roman Catholic cathedral in the Piazza del Duomo, Amalfi.

It is located up a set of stairs so can be challenging for some to reach. Great view of it if sitting at one of the many cafes in the square.

It is dated back to the 9th and 10th centuries and redecorated many times in various styles.

Amazing hidden gem up away from the hustle and bustle of Amalfi. We really enjoyed the tour we received and being able to take home a slip of Amalfi paper as a gift was extra-special. We have framed our piece of paper and will keep it our whole lives in memory of such a lovely experience. A surprisingly entertaining tour, and interactive too! Highly recommend :)

A small neat garden, it is better to combine with a tour of the cathedral, as they are nearby. Here you can find good views of the cathedral.

A small picturesque street with many souvenir shops. Even if you are not going to buy anything, it's worth a stroll, there are many cafes with delicious ice cream and more.

In June we set ourselves the goal of training in Amalfi for climbing and long hiking trails before a long trip through Siberia. This route was one of the first, so to speak, to warm up. It does not take much time, suitable even for beginners. There are many interesting abandoned buildings along the way, which I really like to explore.

The route took all day. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water. The route is not suitable for beginners! It is better to start early in the morning when it is not so hot. If you have high blood pressure, refrain from the route. The views are beautiful and very picturesque as a bonus for all the torment of climbing).

The hotel is interesting because it is located on the territory of the former monastery of the 13th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, the cells were converted into rooms. Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Gore Vidal, Roberto Rosellini have stayed here.

Great way to travel around the coast. It isn't always clear which boat is going to which location, so you have to ask.

This historical fountain situated in the main square in Amalfi.

During a hot day it is popular as a source of drinking water.

Visitors love to sit around this fountain.

It is popular among tourists due to its beautiful architecture and the refreshing spring water. It is an excellent place to quench your thirst on a warm day and enjoy the picturesque surroundings.

This historical fountain dates back to the 8th century and is dedicated to Saint Andrew, who is patron saint of Amalfi.

The fountains sculptures features a blend of Arab-Norman and medieval architectural styles and is quite stunning

The surviving part of the arsenal of Amalfi, with its naves as solemn as those of a church, arouses amazement and admiration: its current appearance accords well with the memories of the maritime republic, not only a powerful hotbed of navigation and commerce in medieval Mediterranean, but the first to develop in this sense among Italian cities: in this regard the passage from the book Ṣūrat al-'Arḍ [ar] ("The face of the Earth, 977AD) by the Arab traveler Ibn Hawkal is often cited, for which Amalfi at that time was "... the most prosperous city of Longobardy, the most noble, the most illustrious for its conditions, the most comfortable and opulent. The territory of Amalfi borders that of Naples; which is a beautiful city, but less important than Amalfi”.
Since the growth to the apogee was early in Amalfi, the decline was also early. And this - if desired - can also be inferred from the Arsenal affair. Conceived for the construction of combat galleys (while merchant ships were built in smaller yards, scattered along the coast), it originally had three naves instead of the current two, and above all it extended towards the sea for another 80 metres; it was therefore truly a majestic construction. But it's said that a good part of the length missing today was semi-destroyed by the fury of the sea in a very violent storm in November 1343. And this part was never rebuilt again, because the city had lost its independence for over a century and a half, and therefore an arsenal no longer had any reason to exist.
Today, after a sad story of abandonment and improper use, the surviving structure has been restored and used as a museum: its forms are still able to recall the past glory of the city.

The view by the pool is stunning, only surpassed by the dining experience and wine pairings. How marvelous that the staff is so proud of their work that they encourage you to linger and enjoy. The fruit dessert is literally the most exquisite masterpiece I have ever seen plated. Thank you for recommending one of the best Barolo's I have ever had from the best year wine has been made in my lifetime.
