Lovely medieval town, never disappoints. Great place of an afternoon walk (and parking was free for the Christmas period!)

The location is perfect, the view is spectacular. When you come out of the church of San Nicolao the whole Lake spreads out in front of you. There is an opportunity to join a mass as well in the above mentioned beautiful church.
You can also take part in a guided tour where you can learn fascinating stories about the chapels depicting the life of Saint Francis.
Both the Franciscan monks and the tour guide are very friendly and welcoming.
Ideal place to recharge your batteries.

We came to this island during our recent stay in Stresa. We walked around and visited the basilica and saw the monastery there. The place was really beautiful and really peaceful. It is easily accessible by public boat. It is definitely worthwhile.

We visited this church and were amazed at its simple beauty and the story behind it. Photos are not allowed inside but you can sit and enjoy the atmosphere and tour the small building. The art work there is really something special. I would be sure to visit when you are in the area.

Piazza Motta is the historical center of Orta San Giulio. Under the arcades lining the square on two side, you'll find little shops, cafés, souvenir shops, a foodstore (Pan e Vino), etc. On the lakeside front, boats depart to other villages along Lake Orta and to San Giulio Island. On Wednesday monring, there is a market on the square
. If you're lucky, you can rent some of the apartments overlooking the square during your stay on Lake Orta - very much recommended.

Just call in here and sit for a while, enjoy the lapping water and watch the boats coming and going. Look at the lovely gardens, soak up the atmosphere of calm and maybe look at the "painting" on the easel of the resident artist.

The space underneath this raised hall is often used by artists and also holds exhibitions - on the day we visited there was a large book sale. The architecture reminded me of a similar building in Poundbury near Dorchester which was modelled on an original structure. The surrounding square throngs with tourists, cafes and ice cream parlours plus there's a great view over the lake towards the island of San Giulio and town of Pella on the far side. The island ferry shuttle and lake service depart from the jetties.

This is a lovely church on the way down from the top of the mountain. Or a bit up the mountain from the middle of town! Worth a visit.

Fine for drinks and snacks. My wife went swimming and didn't have any complaints but be warned it is geared up for young families.

The Torre di Buccione is the remnant of a 12th-century castle. It can be reached from Orta San Giulio by car - 20 minutes - or through various roads and paths after a hike of between 100 minutes and two hours requiring a good physical condition. The various paths are not frequented at all but are in very good condition. They allow you to breathe in nature and continue your meditation and reflections after the discovery of the chapels of Sacro Monte.
