- Lola_in_SpainMadrid28 contributionsLocated in a small chateau in the Massey Gardens, this fascinating gem of a museum about Hussars will appeal to military history buffs and anyone who enjoys seeing gorgeous costumes and paintings. - suejb22Croydon, UK38 contributionsThe cathedral is built on top of the cave where Bernadette apparently had her vision. There were lots of people but it wasn't overcrowded. It is a wonderful building which is huge and has a spiral driveway up to the cathedral. At the front and below the cathedral is another church or part of the cathedral which can be reached by a few steps which is absolutely stunning. There are the most beautiful gold and brightly coloured mosaic/paintings on the outside and the inside is lovely with lots of walls painted as well. I am not at all religious but could really appreciate the beauty of the building and the decorations. There is a smaller round building at the upper cathedral with a gold crown on the top
We parked on a steep hill going out of Lourdes and walked back across the river. There is a hospital on the other side from the cathedral where people were lining up in wheelchairs etc to go across to the cave and cathedral. Definitely worth a visit. If you are religious you can drink, bathe or take away what I presume is holy water. Containers could be purchased from shops in the main streetWritten 21 June 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - YachtjudgeLymington, Hampshire,England455 contributionsWe were made very welcome at the museum. Tarbes was at the centre of the routes used by escaping prisoners of war to cross the Pyrenees and had a very active resistance to the Nazi. occupation. Quite a number of its citizens - including its Mayor suffered death or deportation as a result.
There is a lot of old material, photos that make a vivid explanation of the second world war and its impact on France and the combatants.
Worth going to.Written 29 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
