What travellers are saying
- Cliff SSafety Harbor, FL144 contributionsMost reviews here are 5 star and I totally agree. Many also describe the walk as easy or gently sloping. I’d use slightly stronger adjectives. For us, some of the hills were a bit steeper, but I guess it’s all dependent on your definition of “easy.”Written 8 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Paolo1005Montreal, Canada628 contributionsFox glacier trail an easy 45 min 1 hour walk
Beautiful large trail in a scenic tropical forest.
Must say the glacier is quite far away to get a good look
Nevertheless, everything around it is breathtakingWritten 4 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Well neither happened. The beach itself is nice and a person could spend a nice afternoon here. You decide if it is worth the gravel run.Written 14 February 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Stephen & SueCanberra, Australia2,488 contributionsLike its neighbour Franz Josef, Fox Glacier has retreated so far in recent years it can now only be seen from a distance, after a walk to a lookout.
The Franz Josef walk is much shorter, but the Fox Glacier walk is a lovely 1-2 hour return, which can also be done by bike.
After parking just beyond the bridge you follow a 4 wheel drive track along the river and then up the hill. It soon gets into the rainforest, with frequent views of the river alongside.
The lookout is a hole cut through the forest, 2-3 klms away, which gives you a nice, if distant look at the glacier.
On the walk back make sure you take the short diversion into the Moraine walk, which loops back on to the main track. The rainforest in here is dense, and stunning. Ferns, moss, trees, it’s a wonderful little walk.
However this is not open to bikes, and not suitable for anyone with mobility issues as it’s quite rough.
And ignore Google maps – there is no longer any access from the northside and no other bridge across the river - it’s all been washed away in the massive flood of a few years back.Written 12 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The path is nice and even and level so it’s easy to walk along, even in the dark. We walked her in the daytime as well and the walk is lovely with some great forest to see along the way.Written 24 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Stephen & SueCanberra, Australia2,488 contributionsThis is the absolute highlight of the walk to, or from, the Fox Glacier view point.
As it’s rough, and a bit steep in parts. Take this on the way back down the hill.
You won’t be disappointed, it’s thick forest of ferns, fallen trees and most, absolutely lovely.
But no access for bikes, or people with mobility issues.
Kids would be fine though.Written 12 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The track can be challenging for those who aren't really fit, its worth it absolutely and the pools at the end are amazing! I highly recommend visit the pools early in the morning as well.
We've been welcomed so nicely by Peter Davis and he gave a 'hut talk' and shared the history of the place which added a lot to the general experience for us and we've loved it! the hut has a very nice view from the dorms and there are heaps of sand-flies so I would recommend stay in the hut which will minimise that.
If you can, its worth staying 2 nights and going to Dougles hut (3h hike - a bit more advanced than Copland track).Written 14 February 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We are both pretty fit but this was a challenge! You basically climb the tract to the top using all fours some of the time but when you get to the top it is so so worth it! The views were incredible! You have to do this on a clear day and start no later than 9/10am. I was slightly nervous about getting down purely based on what we were climbing was steep, but it was actually a lot easier to get down then I thought! We completed it in about 7 hours which included photo stops and about half an hour for lunch at the top! If you are in fox and want a challenge/workout then I highly recommend it!! - Shari2 contributionsWOW what a really fun morning. My daughter and I are not totally novice riders but our guides were so amazing. Very knowledgeable guides that really knew their horses and all safety issues were covered. Horse and rider safety was very important to them. Loved the fact that some horses were rescued and destined for a better future. Loved hearing the stories about the horses and other treks fun experiences.Written 23 April 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Prantik BeraKolkata (Calcutta), India140 contributionsWe were lucky to get a good weather during our planned fox glacier helihike activity. The helicopter ride was smooth and the views of the glacier were amazing from above. And then we landed on it, for exploring the glacier surface. The guides gave us all necessary equipments and instructions for the adventure. Then we walked along the uneven glacial surface and explored different ice structures and arches. We got ample photo opportunities, tasted the glacial water(take a bottle to fill up if possible, it tastes heavenly) directly from the little streams and also went inside a narrow arch made of ice. The activity is an absolute must do when in the glacier country in New Zealand South Island.Written 1 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Neil M2 contributionsMountain Helicopters, such a fantastic experience. Theresa in the office is super friendly and helpful. They are realistic about when you can fly. And they were adaptable to weather conditions so you get the best tour. Michael the pilot is brilliant at talking you through the ride and what you are seeing. First time I’d been in a helicopter, so small 4 seater bubble helicopter was a bit of a shock. But honestly the BEST experience! Flew over Fox Glacier and up to Mount Tasmin and Mount Cook. Can’t recommend them highly enough.Written 5 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
