Hi, gdmjlm. What would you like to know about this accommodation?
We are thinking about Vahine Island Resort for our 40th anniversary in mid-2018. Three important questions/issues for us:
1) Mosquitos/Sand Fleas/ Insects - Are these an issue? Do you need to stay "lathered" in repellent all the time?
2) Walking - We love to walk? Are there many walking options? Is it possible to circumnavigate the island on foot?
3) Swimming - Is the ocean accessible for wading/swimming right in front of the individual beach bungalows?
The Trip Advisor reviews are fantastic and Vahine certainly sounds/looks like a "tropical paradise". Thank you in advance for your answers and any other helpful info you wish to pass along.
Surprisingly biting bugs have not been a big problem and we have been there multiple times at different times of the year. Some wipe on DEET before evening sunset has kept us pretty much bug free. Last I was there this February I came home with 3 bites and the bugs just love me.
Snorkel in front of your bungalow at high tide there is enough depth. Because Vahine is so close to the equator the tides are solar influenced so they tend to be highest around midday. Get the app on your phone called "tides" and put in "Fare Ute Point" and look at the monthly tide chart (2nd box down in lower left) and go during a time when the tides are higher for a week each month.
Yes you can walk around, not too far and best early am before breakfast when cooler; walk to the rocky edge where sun comes, past staff housing and around the area where island owner is building a big house and back. Nice!
Just returned from an amazing trip to Vahine. We did not have any issues with bugs. Did not need any sprays.
I like to walk too! The island is very small so a complete lap of the island takes only about 15' if walking fast!
(I tended to get distracted by views/shells)
