I have two adventuresome boys ages 12 and 10. They won't want to be on bikes unless they can move around a lot. Is the guided tour a lot of stopping and starting? Would you recommend just renting the bikes and going on our own or taking the tour?
Hello! I understand... I have two similar aged children. The tour does have a LOT of stopping and starting. My recommendation is the Hermit Road Package which is your bike rentals and I recommend it with the two way shuttle option. It's a 5 mile ride. You catch a shuttle from our facility to Hopi Point which allows you to skip the uphill portions of the Hermit road ride. It's then flat and mostly slight downhill grade. You ride the road (pulling aside for park buses that pass every 20 minutes)... and then a paved greenway. Lots of great outlooks and you get to go at your own pace.
Keep in mind that almost the entirety of the Rim Trail is closed to bikes. On Hermit Road you'll be on the road with the shuttle buses out of sight of the canyon most of he time except at the viewing points where the buses stop. The last mile of the Rim Trail before Hermit's Rest is paved and open to bikes but away from the canyon with no views. I'd bet your boys would love hiking along the rim instead of biking down a road.
