We were on our own and visited Istanbul only. The staff at the Double Tree is knowlegeable and courteous and will give you all the information you need to enjoy the city. You can walk almost anywhere from this hotel and it's right on the tram line. Istanbul is packed with tourists from all over the world. At major tourist sites, if you encounter lines that are unreasonably long, I recommend moving to so-called "secondary sites" so your memories will be of something more than waiting and waiting for something to happen. For example, if the Blue Mosque lines are 3 hours long, as they sometimes are, go to see the Souleman Mosque.

We travelled on our own to Istanbul but took tours from a local company to orientated ourselves and to miss the lines. Then went back on our own to spend more time. It is possible to travel to Izmir on your own, and probably cheaper. You can hire guides there, or get a car and do it on your own. We went with a company, but if I had to do it again I would rent a car and go alone. We felt rushed.

We did Istanbul on our own. Plan on 5-6 days because there are so many things to do. The tram system in Istanbul is great. Buy a prepaid pass. Be sure to see some of the lesser known sites such as Basilica Cistern, Chora Church, & The Mosaic Museum. A stay on the Asian side for a few days is fun because you use the ferry system. Cappadoccia is amazing. Be sure to do a balloon ride, we used Kappadoccia Balloon which was wonderful. Izmir was fun. If you can get to Ephesus, it is well worth it. The ruins are amazing. When you get out of Istanbul language can become a big problem. Turkey is beautiful & amazing. Have a great trip.
