Is it better to book the activities ahead of time thru the website or when we are there? I will be there early March and do not tours to book up.
Dear Guest,
If you already know the activities you want to do, you can send us an e-mail in order to book ahead the tours, if you haven't decided yet; you can wait until your check in and get more details about the activities and book it one day in advance.
Since weather tends to be an uncertain factor in that part of the world, especially during rainy season, I would advise to wait to book any outdoor activities until you get there. I had booked an 8 hour (read expensive) cloud forest hiking trip with Ecoterra at Arenal but ended up staying in a cabin and near a fire place most of the time because the wind was just too strong to be safe in the forest.
I booked most of mine when I was in Costa Rica and it worked out fine. I had the hotel help me call for reservations and get me discounts too. There are so many groups it shouldn't be hard and they all want your business. I did book my rafting trip ahead of time ..about 1 month. that's only because they would take me en route to my next destination city so I wanted that secured. But with that said, I would prior to your trip go online to see which tours and companies interest you and their prices. If you do book in CostA Rica don't book in town at the kiosks on the streets and give them cash. Some people in my group booked a night tour that way, paid cash in advance and got scammed in arenal. Go through your hotel or reputable companies you have researched online. Good luck- either way you will have a great time!
We were there last March. It was mostly dry but rained a couple days for a short while. As far as booking adventures...we had a Living Social deal from Ecoterra and it included our stuff. I would call Casa Luna and see whether things book up quickly and whether they recommend booking I advance. Personally, I would book in advance but I'm a planner. :)
If you use Ecoterra ask for Alan for at least one of your adventures. He is the BEST!! He is a wonderful guide, knows his stuff, is very friendly and welcoming, and speaks perfect English too. We enjoyed our time with him and learned a lot on his tours.
We were in a package with Ecoterra so our activities were prebooked. It is very accessible to book when you get there. They have info at the front desk or there are lots of companies in town which is a $5 cab ride. You can walk or take a cab to La Fortuna waterfall on your own.
You can wait until you get there, The hotel front desk can arrange your tours and this gives you the flexibility, depending on weather, etc. Try to get a second floor room facing the volcano if possible. The views of the volcano over the hotel gardens are spectacular. We also enjoyed exploring the river just behind the pool/spa area.
Most of our activities were planned prior to the trip with a package but we choose an activity the day before on a free day on our itinerary and had no issues. They have a long list to choose from with prices included in the rooms. We were there in three rainy season tho so I am not sure how much busier it will be in March. This hotel is amazing tho if for nothing more than the location and garden. I would have been happy with a cot on the balcony but the rooms are really nice but simple. Hope you love it as much as I did!!
