Grand Bahia Principe Tulum Questions & Answers

Keller, Texas, United States

Planning a trip to Grand Bahia resort in Riviera Maya in August. Can't decide which resort section to stay at (Akumal or Tulum). Been to Barcelo many times and wanting to try something new. Which resort is best as far as dining and beach area? Prefer sandy beach not too rocky.

Tulum is definitely very central and closest to the beach. The beach at Tulum does have a section that is best reserved to snorkelers but it get sandier as you approach the marina. The Akumal resort gets hit harder with waves. The beach a Tulum offers wave breakers so even when the winds are high you can still enjoy a swim. I wouldn't worry about the best restaurants. As you have access to all of them on all 3 resorts with the exception of the buffet at Sian Ka'an which is 18 plus. They are all located close to each other and you can take a mini street car from one resort to the other. Each resort has something to offer so take the time to visit each resort and find out what the night life will offer. The Brazilian restaurant is very good! We ate once at the Japanese restaurant in Coba and once at the Seafood restaurant in Akumal. The pool at Akumal is awesome. It stretches of throughout the center of the resort. There is ample chairs at the beach that we always found one and shade despite the hotel being full. The pools were another story! Arrive early! Even though I got ill at the resort I still think it was a nice place. Use the hand sanitizer and stay away from food you think was washed with tap water. (ie Salad!)

this is a blurb out of the review i had written for tulum:

On to the beach, the beach at Tulum is nice itself, though there are some rocks here and there, so do be careful, however, once you get into the water there are lots of rocks and coral, you are able to avoid these as the water is beautiful and clear and there are sections that are clear of the rocks. Also there are BIG boulder type rocks (to keep the large waves away from the beach) which are a bit of an eye sore. One thing we did have a bit of an issue with is that soon as you enter the beach, for a 100 feet either way of the entrance, all the cabana’s are reserved for “privilege” club members and you have to go down the beach to find a spot where you are “allowed” to sit if you are a regular citizen, haha. Note, there is no beach at the Coba resort and the Akhumal beach is the best out of all 3. On that note, if you do have kids, Coba has a kids water park that isn’t small and they will have a blast there, we took our kids there a couple of times.

Choose Tumul . We walked from one end to the other and my opinion is that Akumal and Coba are too far away from main area. According to Thomas Cooke rep. the mosquito season does not begin until end of July and Akumal and Coba are too near the jungle end of the precipe. People we travelled with were not impressed with Akumal as whilst visiting there one night for the entertainment a incident ocurred involving his I phone a guest said he had handed it in to Akumal reception. This was denied by a staff member who then produced it but it had been put into airplane mode to stop it being tracked or rang. Not good. The beach at Tumul is not rocky it is certain areas when you enter the sea have stoney areas but you can see where the sandy entries are as the water is so clearand like walking into a bath. If you like fish take some bread to feed them and be surrounded by lots of fish. The Eating side is the same at all the buffets lots of choice. Plenty of normal Brit food if your fussy and special area for kids.We had a evening meal visit by a Racoon who put his front paws on our table. Harmless, but do not feed them. If you want alcart'e meals at the different restaurants i.e. Brazillian, Mexican etc. you need to book them at a desk close to reception preferably just after you have been issued your room. You will be given a date/time and they get booked very quickly. Enjoy your stay and make sure you take at least 30 factor sun cream as it costs a fortune in the resort. Another tip do take anti stomach bug meds i.e. Imodium as 20% of guests suffer even though hand sanitizer is at the restaurant entry. This med. costs 10 times more than in UK!
