Can I drive right to the bay and rent a kayak /sign up for snorkeling without advance notice?
Yes, the older gentleman’s name is Derrick, he owns Kona Kayaks and can set you up for a kayaking trip at the bottom of Napo’opo Rd. It’s a fun adventure to kayak across the bay. Don’t forget to bring your snorkel gear, as there is excellent snorkeling by Cooks Monument and you may get lucky enough to see spinner dolphins that frequent the bay.
YES!!! They are a local family just a short drive and walk through the neighborhood from the bay :-) Ehu & Kai Adventures #808-328-8775. I use them regularly when I have visitors; they have the permits required and you're supporting local families :-) Mahalo!
Yes, you can. I did a post a while back about the Kayak rental I used, and you can get there. It's way past the monument - heading south. Definitely need to drive. I will say the kayaking is very easy. There were 1 and 2 person kayak's. the 2 person kayak's could also fit a small toddler if you are comfortable bringing one along, and the rentals all have life jackets and dry bags to store stuff in the kayak.
There's an older local gentleman that drives a little scooter back and forth to the south side of the bay, into the park throughout the day trying to get folks to rent one of his kayaks. We've been there several times, two years in a row and saw him every time. His house and business is right on the corner, about 100 yards from the park, though I don't remember the company name. There's also another kayak rental place around the corner from there. We were there in the summer and both places had plenty of kayaks for rent and were licensed. My advice.... don't waste your money on a boat tour. The bay is easily navigable by kayak and, if you're a good swimmer, you can just use your hands and feet. Be prepared to see lots of dolphins, but only if you arrive early.
No. You have to choose from one the kayak companies in the nearby towns that have permits. The park entrance to the bay has no rental stores. Check online for best price. During peak seasons to the Big Island you may have to book a few days in advance.
I don’t believe there are places to rent from right at the bay. We rented from Kona Boys. I would recommend calling to reserve first. But depending on when you go, there may be lots of space.
No. I don’t believe you can drive right in. Most people arrive via boat tour and are not allowed on land. I was told that those arriving by land had to park up near highway and hike down. I’m not sure how far that is. I would think any kayak tour you would want to arrange ahead of time.
I’m not sure if you can drive to a pint on the bay to do things yourself. I would say no, but that’s no way an official answer. If I were you I’d definitely look into a trip with Kona Stlye. Quit being cheap and do it right. Ask for Capt. Kalani and enjoy the day. It’s the way to go. Kalani shared so much Hawaiian history and made a few stops on the way back to share some local lore. Come on, take the plunge. No pun intended. Kona Style and Capt. Kalani are the way to do Kealakekua Bay.
I am not sure,we only signed up for snorkeling the night before and were able to go and there was lots of room left on the boat .So if there is still openings I am sure you could. We used sea paradise (800)322-5663 they had lots of room left, the office is up in a shopping center ,the other that I cannot remember the name of that was right on the bay had a boat that was loaded. We had a great time with sea paradise our boat held like 40 and there was only 13 on it so it was fantastic
