Hi, We are planning to take a helicopter ride on either 28th or 29th March from Mt Cook . Just wanted to know
1 - We need to book these in advance or we should book it there after seeing the weather conditions. ?
2 - We want to experience snow landing . Which one should we take ? HLC3, HLC4 or HLC5 ? We can plan for HLT4 from Twizel too. But wanted to know the difference majorly ? Also we have heard that Fox glaciers /Franz Josef are better in terms of view ? Is it correct ?only HLC4 is for fox glacier ?
Thank you to each one of you for your kind and quick reply. I was clueless that there are many companies which operate and you can shop around there it self for flight bookings . I was thinking its only one company which operate and that is "The Helicopter Line"
on 28th we are travelling from Queens-town to Mt Cook. We will plan to leave early , so that we can have time to go to Glentanner to do the research and booking . We are staying at Mt cook village for one night and leaving for Christchurch on 29th afternoon. So in case weather is bad on 28th we can try our luck again on 29th March.
I dont think March end is pick season and as few of you are suggesting we can get a good deal there , we will book it there only .Also we need to check about snow landing.
Hope this is fine.Please suggest.
I loved the Mt Cook helicopter copter ride. It was one of the highlights of my holiday. Landing on the glacier was wonderful and we had fantastic weather. Our flight was booked in advance so not sure how easy it is to book on walk up
I was going to do Franz Josef but it was terrible weather so it was cancelled thus I can't compare.
You can book its there as well but it's advices that you make your bookings in advance....
I don't know the code but u can just ask for a heli ride with snow landing and that's should take care....
All the mentioned glaciers have its own beauty and charm I stayed in Mt.Cook and it's a beautiful place to stay and go for walks ....
Definitely book in advance. If the weather is not good enough for flying all major operators offer a full refund.
We had 3 attempts to get a flight due to weather and finally flew out of Mt Cook and landed on Tasman glacier. The views were spectacular.
I hope this helps.
Deffinatly book in advance as lots of tour bus's come in and out so booking fill up fast. If they can't fly they will let you know on the day... The weather can change in a matter of minutes there. If in franz or fox calls this number a guy called Mike he is amazing to deal with and my customers always come back raving about how good he is 0275677775
We flew from Glentanner and did the 40 mins or so flight using helicopterdotcodotnz To answer your questions, the pilots will not decide exactly where to land until a few minutes prior to landing (so way after you have taken off), and when you are up there you will understand why, the local weather will determine where you land. So just take the promise of a snow landing and be prepared to take many photos.
My impression is that few people book way ahead, many book day of (we did), my impression after listening to the Operations staff is that the number of flights depends on the number of people interested. I would suggest taking the Glentanner option because you are immediately on the snow fields (you don't waste time flying in) and the drive to Glentanner is pretty spectacular. Do shop around the many sales outlets for flights, we saved hundreds of dollars.
I would recommend one of the longer flights and take the highest snow landing - the flight was one of the highlights of our trip
Yes you are right, but the best helicopter company of all by far is another and very safe! Suggest that you ask a company called Southern Crossings ask for Sarah or Trevor if you use them they will make your trip unbeatable!!! This refers to North and South Islands!! Have a wonderful time
