Try not to go from San Juan to Guánica M-F from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. Its rush hour. Drive during the daytime since toll road is under major repairs: be in the lookout for potholes! Like others have suggested, download free app Waze. It's a nice way to know the greater Island of the Puerto Rican archipelago, the largest of some 180, two of them are Island municipalities. Impressive diverse eco-systems in Puerto Rico: El Yunque rainforest and dry Forest (near Copamarina), karst mountain range, beaches, bioluminiscent bays (one in Parguera, Lajas near Guánica), wetlands, fertile valleys, etc. Enjoy!
I rented a vehicle. I used my gps. Took me straight down the middle of PR cut through Ponce. Approximately 1 hrs 50 minutes. My flight was delayed I didn’t get in until after 2 am so no traffic but roads are dark. I suggest just take it nice a slow. A lot of curvy road ways, but smooth drive.
Rent a car and go the long way if you have the time. Just get there before dark the road is dark. Checkout the lighthouse El Faro Lighthouse. It's the farthest point southwest corner of island and pretty cool. Or la Parquera which is on the way to hotel from San Juan. When renting a car choose the tollway option a little cost yet defuses any stress when choosing a roadway. Enjoy!
I and sure you have a cell phone with Waze it works very well in All of Puerto Rico,it will be much better if you use Waze directions are in English, make sure volume is high.
