Arrival at the Jose Marti International Airport

Flights to Havana, terminate at Jose Marti International Airport. The first terminal on the airport is used for domestic Havana flights. The second terminal is mainly used for charter flights coming from the USA, while the third terminal is used for other international flights. Be advised that the customs officials in the airport are not as lenient as those in other countries. In addition, the baggage inspection can be very slow.

Airfare to Havana varies depending on which location you come from and what travel-class you book. To get cheap flights to Havana, get economy class seats. In addition, always compare airfare rates online to get the best airline deals.

Getting Around Havana

Hiring a taxi is the best way for tourists to get around. Although the vehicles are quite old, they do provide cheap service. To get cheaper transport, try out the Coco taxis, tricycles designed to mimic the regular taxi service. Getting around by bus is also common, but it can be too crowded during peak hours. A good suggestion is to wait for the next bus if one is too full. Other means of transport include cycling and renting a car. However, you can always walk to get a good exercise.

Main Attractions

The Museum of the Revolution, the Capitol Building, and the Havana Club Rum Factory are common places of interest. If you are looking for a nice stroll, try walking the streets of Prado and El Malecon. These areas offer a nice experience with street life. Just off the El Malecon is the building for US Special Interests where Cubans apply for US visas. For a taste of history, visit the Catedral de San Cristobal, Castillo de la Real Fuerza, and the Plaza de la Revolucion. Havana is also famous for its John Lennon Park where the one and only statue of a western musician stands.

Social Highlights

If you want to go shopping, be warned that the city is not a cheap place to be for a tourist. The ATMs accept Visa Cards, but not MasterCard. If you want to burn money shopping, the best place to go is Obispo Street in Old Havana. For a good eating experience, the ambience at the Café de Oriente is quite heart-warming. For grills, visit the La Fontana Restaurant. If you are up for a drink or mojito, the La Bodeguita del Medio is a good place to go. This is where Ernest Hemingway used to hangout. The El Floridita and the Los Buccaneros Hanoi also offer an excellent mojito drinking experience.
