Arriving at Punta Cana

Flights to Punta Cana arrive at Punta Cana International Airport. This facility is smaller than many international hubs, but it is modern and offers passengers a variety of services. Most major airlines fly into this airport, and if you want cheap flights to Punta Cana you should consider travelling there between the months of May and November. The tourist season spans between December and April, and airfare to Punta Cana is more expensive during these months. Passengers have access to typical convenience stores, duty-free shops, and restaurants at the airport. You can connect to the Internet from wireless devices using free Wi-Fi as well.

Getting Around Punta Cana

Since Punta Cana is a resort area, many people book local transit through tour operators when they arrange their Punta Cana flights. If this is not the case for you, there are taxis available at the airport, and the drivers will provide a list of standard fees if you inquire. Be sure to clarify the rate and destination before you get into the cab. The local bus system is cheaper, and the routes cover most of the places you will want to go. You can also rent a car from any of the major agencies at the airport or on any resort. Be sure to purchase the most comprehensive insurance available, and keep a map in the car while you are travelling.

Punta Cana Main Attractions

Most visitors will want to go to Santo Domingo to see the historical colonial sites like Alcazar de Colon, which is the palace of Diego Columbus. This is also home to the Cathedral of the Americas. Another fascinating site is Altos de Chavon, which is a Mediterranean-style village built high above the Chavon River. This artist's town features museums, studios, and a huge amphitheatre. Nature lovers can enjoy a safari-like experience at Bavaro Runners or visit Manati Park to play with dolphins and view the gorgeous tropical gardens. Those who like adventure tours can arrange boat tours, rafting excursions, and scuba diving tours as well.

Punta Cana Shopping, Dining and Nightlife

When you are out and about in Punta Cana there are many opportunities to buy local wares, but beware that buying dried animals like shells from turtles or crustaceans is illegal. Other vendors and shop owners, who hawk wares will expect you to barter, so do not pay their initial asking prices. There are a number of nice restaurants in the resort areas, and you can find a large variety of foods. Seafood is particularly tasty in Punta Cana, but you should also sample the decadent baked goods and confections. Most resorts have free-flowing alcohol at their pubs and bars, and at night you will likely find plenty of entertainment. Mamahuana is the local cocktail made from rum and wine with other flavourings. Rum is the most popular liquor in the Dominican Republic, and breweries offer a range of light to dark aged rums. Food and drink are not expensive in Punta Cana, and many tourists take advantage of all-inclusive vacation packages when they book their trips.
