Getting Around Vieques

You can get around the island most conveniently by renting a car. There are many car rental companies on the island and you should reserve one by contacting them ahead of time. You will have access to taxis, but you may not get far with this type of transport since most of them will only take you as far as the next accessible beach. If you are the adventurous or health-conscious type, you are in luck since there are many mountain bikes for hire. Rentals cost around $25 a day and can be delivered straight to your hotel.

Main Attractions in Vieques

One of the best sights to behold in the area is Bioluminescent Bay, also known as the Mosquito Bay. With a dazzling display of glowing blue-green light coming from micro organisms, this tourist attraction includes several boat tours and kayak trips. If you want to see one of nature's best miracles, do not schedule your visit to coincide with a full moon because the light will reduce visibility of the "glow". To experience history, visit Isabel Segunda, a Spanish fort, and the country's version of Stonehenge, a historical ruin left behind by the Taino Indians. There is also a small museum at the Vieques Conservations and Historical Trust where you can experience the country's rich history, culture and ecological wonders.
