Main Attractions

Begerac is a beautiful destination for visitors looking for a tranquil city break. Start with a stroll through the scenic Old Town (or ‘vieille ville’), where cobblestoned streets and medieval buildings help transport visitors to the past. Visit the National Tobacco Museum in Maison Peyrarede, a lovely medieval building with turreted corners. The exhibits detail the crop’s history, and trace the use of tobacco in France. Wander down Place Pelissiere to St. Jacques Church, once a major stop for pilgrims. The church has seen many changes over the centuries, but has managed to retain its original bell-tower and balcony. The city is home to two statues of Cyrano de Bergerac, although the actual Cyrano is not known to have any connection with the town.

Shopping, Dining and Nightlife

The local market is a twice-weekly affair with numerous stalls spread out around the Notre Dame church. Tables are piled high with freshly-baked bread, nuts and delicacies such as local truffles and foie gras. Sample some of the markets’ best produce at La Table du Marche, where the dishes feature ingredients purchased from the stalls nearby. The Restaurant Le Saint Jacques serves many of the dishes that the Dordogne region is famous for. Try some foie gras with quince jelly or beef carpaccio with truffle cream. Enjoy the meal with a selection of delicious wines, all produced locally. After dinner, retire to Le P’tit Clou for some cocktails, or visit Michael’s to sample more local wine.
