Arriving in Lyon

Cheap flights to Lyon depart from Manchester, Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick airports. Some flights to Lyon may be available from other regional airports around the UK. Flights to Lyon will arrive at Lyon Saint Exupery Airport. Trains operated by Rhonexpress provide frequent services between the airport and Lyon city centre. Tickets can be purchased online through the Rhonexpress website, from the vending machines in the station, or onboard the train. Metered taxis are available outside the airport terminal for trips to Lyon and other destinations.

Getting Around Lyon

Lyon has a fairly small city centre which can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Bicycles can be rented from the Velo’v stands located throughout the city centre. Credit cards are required to when hiring the bikes. The bikes can be returned to any Velo’v stand in Lyon or Villeurbanne. The public transport network is operated by TCL and includes the Metro, buses, trams and two funiculars. Check the TCL website for information on routes and timetables. Single tickets can be purchased from bus and tram drivers. Save on multiple journeys by purchasing a booklet of ten tickets, a one-day ticket, or a ticket valid for two hours. Evening tickets offer unlimited travel on all public transport after 7pm. These are available from ticket vending machines as well as TCL sales offices. The Lyon City Card (valid for one to three days) offers free or reduced fees to certain attractions, as well as free, unlimited journeys on public transport. It can be purchased from the Lyon Tourist Office, selected hotels and some shops in the city. Taxis are readily available from outside the train stations and in the city centre, and can be booked ahead of time.

Visit the birthplace of cinema at the Institut Lumiere to find out more about the history of film and its’ inventors, the Lumiere Brothers. One of the largest malls in Europe, La Part-Dieu is a haven for hardcore shoppers. It is packed with popular high street brands, international fast food chains and a multi-screen cinema. The famed Les Halles de Lyon indoor market offers delicacies such as pungent cheeses, foie gras in various forms, and plenty of sweet treats. Visit a homely bouchon to enjoy local dishes at modest prices, or splurge at the famed La Mere Brazier. Georges Five features an extensive list of local and regional wines, accompanied by a tasty menu of tapas and antipasti.
