Arriving in Lanzarote

Cheap flights to Lanzarote depart from Manchester Airport, Stansted and Gatwick airports near London. Flights to Lanzarote arrive at Lanzarote Airport near the town of Arrecife. Lanzarote is also served from a good number of UK cities by low-cost and charter airlines. UK and EU citizens do not require a visa for a stay of up to 90 days. There are plenty of taxis available for hire just outside the arrivals hall. Arrecifebus operates two bus routes between the airport and Arrecife. From Arrecife, local buses and taxis are available for onward journeys to other towns and resorts.

Getting Around Lanzarote

Arrecifebus operates the network of local buses on Lanzarote. Bus services are inexpensive and fairly frequent. Purchase a bus pass at Arrecife Bus Station for multiple journeys – there will be substantial savings on regular fare prices if the pass is used. Taxis are the most convenient method of transport around Lanzarote. They can be flagged down in the street if the green light on top is lit up. Most resorts will also have taxi ranks with a queue of taxis waiting in front.

Main Attractions

Local artist Cesar Manrique created the lushly beautiful Jardin de Cactus (Cactus Garden) to display over a thousand varieties of cacti. There are also some metal sculptures and a restored windmill to be seen in the garden. Timanfaya National Park is a magnificent showcase for the island’s stark volcanic beauty. The park includes a visitors’ centre, as well as a restaurant where meat is cooked with the heat escaping from underground vents. Jameos del Agua is a spectacular volcanic cave that has been converted into a concert hall and auditorium. A short stroll away is Cueva de los Verdes (Green’s Cave. The well-lit tunnels and caverns can be explored on a guided tour through the cave system.

Shopping, Dining and Nightlife

Calle Leon y Castillo is Arrecife’s high street and main thoroughfare. There are a range of international brands, local independent shops as well as many cafes and restaurants lining both sides of the street. The huge Biosfera Shopping Centre can be found in the popular tourist resort of Puerto del Carmen. For something less commercial, visit the small town of Teguise for its weekly Sunday market. Pick up anything from delicate needlework and folk art to knock-off brand name watches. There is also a food area filled with stalls selling an array of street food, hamburgers and kebabs. Located in a former salt cellar, Almacen del Sal offers freshly caught Canarian-style seafood and grilled meat dishes. Bodega la Casona Restaurant is hidden in a beautiful country mansion in Yaisa. Enjoy traditional Canarian cuisine while surrounded by beautiful original artworks. Centro Comercial Papagayo is one of the liveliest nightlife hubs on Lanzarote. Atlantis and Jungle Bar are two of the more popular nightclubs along the strip – both stay open until at least 4am.
