Elefterios Venizelos Airport, a major Eastern European hub, is located 17 miles east of Athens. All visitors must be in possession of a valid passport to enter Greece. EU nationals may stay indefinitely, however, American, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand citizens, may only stay up to 90 days without a visa. To expedite processing through customs and immigration you need to be in the correct line. If your flight to Athens originated in the United States, or any non-E.U. nation, you need to be in the ""non-E.U."" line for entry. E.U. travellers will need to join the ""E.U."" line. If your flight to Athens has a connection to another city follow the sign to the domestic departure gates.
A limo is an inexpensive way to get to the city center if travelling in a group on your flight to Athens. The regular bus service for 3 Euros is a reliable and inexpensive way of getting to the city. Many airlines offer cheap airfares to Athens you may want to check with a travel agency about pre-booking a rental vehicle. You can also go directly to the car rental area, which is walking distance from the arrivals building. Taxis are available outside the arrivals area at exit 3 and provide an alternative to public transport in the city of Athens. Global Taxi Reservations Ltd offer services from short day trips to week long bookings.
The Acropolis and the Parthenon are not the only two reasons to book a flight to Athens. Visit The Planka neighbourhood around the Acropolis with its winding streets and interesting small shops. A cooler alternative is a fun ride up Lycabettus Hill where you can enjoy Athens from a different perspective. The Agora and the temple of Hephaestus, the public art displays, the Greek Parliament Building, and a stroll through Syntagma Square are all fun things to do and see.
Buy a ticket to Athens, one of the safer cities in Europe, where shopping the Planka at night gives a new meaning to ‘shop til' you drop'. A late-night periptero dispenses everything from snacks to snickers and can even provide directions in case you get lost.
A convenient stop on the Metro is the Thissio where you can enjoy a concert hosted by the city. Join the locals for a night stroll and enjoy the beautiful view of the Acropolis while sipping a drink or a coffee.
Another stop on the Metro is Piraeus where you can have dinner at one of the seaside taverns at the port Microlimano: romantic but pricey. A more economic dinner and just as romantic is grabbing a ""Quick Pita"" and enjoying people watching on a bench in the public square. There is so much to see and do you might just have to book another Athens flight and continue your Greek adventure.
