Arriving in Naples

Cheap flights to Naples depart from Gatwick and Stansted airports near London, as well as from Manchester Airport. Some flights to Naples may be available from regional airports around the UK. Citizens of the UK will not require a visa to enter Italy. Alibus and bus number 3S offer bus services from the airport to Naples Central Station and Piazza Municipio. The buses depart from outside the arrivals area of the terminal. Taxis are also available from the airport for journeys to Naples city centre and other destinations. The taxis operate on a flat fare basis, with fares priced according to the distance travelled.

Getting Around Naples

The public transport system in Naples is large and can be confusing due to the number of different operators. Buses and trams are run by ANM. Be aware that tickets cannot be purchased on board the bus, so buy a ticket before boarding. Check the ANM website for information about routes and timetables. The funicular system is an efficient and scenic way to get from Central Naples to Vomero and other districts. Naples also has a fairly comprehensive Metro network providing transport between the city centre and suburbs. Check the Metro website for more information. Single tickets and daily passes can be used on all forms of transportation.

Main Attractions

The lively city of Naples has a very different character to other Italian cities, and is a great destination for a city break. See the fairytale exterior of the Palazzo Donn’Anna, rumoured to be haunted by the ghost of a heartbroken bride. The Castell Dell’Ovo (Castle of the Egg) is the oldest castle in Naples, and has a Museum of Prehistory within its grounds. The impressive Maschio Angioino houses a fine collection of artworks and historic artefacts. Piazza del Plebiscito is the city’s main square. It is surrounded by the Palazzo Reale and the Church of San Francisco de Paola. Discover the ruins of Pompeii at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. The city was simultaneously destroyed and preserved when Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, leaving the city blanketed in lava and ash.

Shopping, Dining and Entertainment

The Galleria Umberto I is one of the most splendid shopping centres in Naples, and an attraction in its own right. Its elegant glass-roofed arcades shelter a series of shops and tranquil cafes. Pizza is the city’s most famous export, and there are countless places serving it here, in all variations. Housed in an unassuming shopfront, Da Michele is favoured by many locals and visitors in the know. The legendary pizzeria only serves two varieties of pizza – Marinara or Magherita – both handmade on the premises. Velvet Zone (simply ‘Velvet’ to its denizens) is a fixture on the city’s club scene, with nights featuring international DJs and fun, trashy Europop.
