Getting Around Taipei

There are airport express buses that run to and from the airport, and you have the option of high-speed trains and taxis as well. You may save some money by booking transport to your hotel in advance, possibly when you arrange airfare to Taipei. Taxis and sedans are more expensive than the shuttles and buses since the Taiwan airport is an hour away from Taipei. The city itself has very efficient and clean subway transportation. You can buy single trip tickets for the metro or use a pre-paid smart card called the “EasyCard”, which is handy if you use the city buses as well. Local taxis are relatively cheap, but the fares are still a little more expensive than public transit.

Taipei Main Attractions

There are several landmarks in Taipei that are of interest to most visitors. The Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall honours the famous 20th century Chinese military leader, and it is a revered symbol for the Republic of China. The Chinese host their patriotic celebrations and hold peaceful protests in this spot. There is a museum dedicated to Chiang here too. Taipei International Financial Centre, called “Taipei 101” by many, is a glorious skyscraper with 101 floors. Its unique architecture resembles the resilient and fast-growing bamboo plant, which is important in Chinese culture. Another notable landmark is the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, which honours the Republic of China's founder, Dr. Sun Yat-sen. You will likely want to visit the National Theatre Hall or the National Concert Hall to catch one of the local folk performances or a classical Taiwanese play. There are countless temples and museums located all over this metropolis as well.

Taipei Shopping, Dining and Night Life

Xinyi District is known to be the primary shopping district in Taipei, where you can find modern malls such as Taipei 101, Mitsukoshi, and Hankyu department stores. The area is also packed with posh clubs and lounges such as Barcode, Room 18 and Marquee. If you want local arts and crafts, you'll want to go to the Weekend Jade Market for items made from jade and visit Yingge for exquisite pottery. Neihu has a lot of shopping centres as well as local eateries with decadent Taiwanese cuisine. It is not a tourist-trap area, so you will feel free and relaxed during your visit. Shilin has a lot of museums for daytime entertainment as well as a very active night market where shoppers can buy a variety of wares, particularly imitation designer clothing and accessories. You can also find excellent local cuisine at the night market. Some popular vendor snacks are mango ice, pearl milk tea, Taiwanese sausage, and “stinky tofu”. Several districts offer night-clubs and bars as well as coffee and tea-houses. You will never have a shortage of activities or have trouble finding food and drinks in the bustling city of Taipei.
