Arriving in Ho Chi Minh City

The Tan Son Nhat International Airport is situated 4 miles north of Ho Chi Minh City. It is the biggest airport in Vietnam with around 15 million passengers using the airport every year and is served by two runways. This means that it should be possible to get cheap flights to Ho Chi Minh City. It is lacking in airport facilities but there are plans to replace it and build a new airport further out to handle international flights. The airport bus is cheap but can be unreliable. Taxis and minibuses are available though, as well as the 'cylos' or 'moto', which are motorbike taxis.

Getting Around Ho Chi Minh City

The motorbike taxis are a particularly adventurous way to see the city, but normal taxis are probably safer, especially late at night. There are official taxis such as Main Linh and Vinataxi and you should stick to these. The bus system is not the best, and many buses are quite old and crowded. In the central areas where many tourist attractions are located you can walk around quite easily but be careful when crossing roads. If you wish to travel to Vung Tau there are some hydrofoils available that are quite fast. These are operated by Vina Express and also Greenlines, and make quite a contrast to your Ho Chi Minh City flights.

Ho Chi Minh City Attractions

The War Remnants Museum is a controversial place, with graphic photos and displays concerning the Vietnam War. Whatever your views on this there is no doubt it reminds us all of the horrors of war. The Notre Dame Cathedral, built by the French, is an impressive building. It is great example of French colonial architecture. If you want to venture out of the city then a tour of the Mekong Delta is definitely worth considering. There are various types of boats, which will transport you around the river and to the various islands. It covers a huge area so a day trip will only scratch the surface. If after your flights to Ho Chi Minh City you just want to do something relaxing, which all of the family can enjoy, then the Dam Sen Water Park is great value for money.

Best Shopping and Dining in Ho Chi Minh City

Cho Ben Thanh Market is great for finding bargains. The market food section also has lots of stalls selling authentic Vietnamese food that is freshly made and a good value. There are also some great restaurants here with deep fried fish being particularly popular. The Hoa Tuc Restaurant located in the Hai Ba Trung district serves great traditional food such as soft shell crab and spring rolls. The huge quantity and variety of Vietnamese food will make your airfare to Ho Chi Minh City seem like a bargain.
