Arriving at Beijing

Flights to Beijing arrive at the Beijing Capital International Airport, which is one of the busiest airports in Asia. Once you arrive there, you will have no doubt that you are in China. While this facility is ultra-modern, it still channels a traditional Chinese flavor through its colour scheme and Feng Shui inspired layout. Its long dragon shape facilitates a speedy shuttle service through the core of airport to allow passengers to move between platforms without delay. The signs are in Chinese as well as English, and there are information counters at every entrance to assist visitors. International travelers are required to go through the immigration and customs counters.

Getting Around in Beijing

Beijing has a very efficient subway system that carries airport passengers taking cheap flights to and from central Beijing. You can tour any district using the eight railway lines and a network of over 124 stations. Each line has specific operating times, and the durations between trains can vary. Plan to use the subway between 5 a.m and 11 p.m to avoid being stranded, and make sure you have a subway map to avoid getting lost or stuck at a station after hours. Most people obtain a map when they book Beijing flights. The fares are cheap, and with the exception of the Airport Express, the mileage and transfers are unlimited.

Beijing Main Attractions

This ancient city has numerous attractions for tourists. One of the most visited cultural districts is Dongcheng. Its main street, called Nan Luo Gu Xiang, was built in the 13th century. It boasts a bustling market as well as many restaurants and an ancient ancestral temple. Its residential section is the only one left of its kind, designed in a traditional layout from the Yuang Dynasty. Some other areas of interest are the Temple of Heaven, Lama Temple, the Forbidden City, the Ming Tombs, and the Summer Palace. Each site has its own rich history as well as museums, parks, galleries, and other cultural attractions to keep you entranced for days.

Beijing Shopping, Dining and Night Life

If you were lucky to save money on the airfare to Beijing, then you will have a little left over to shop for arts and crafts. Beautiful detailed batik wall hangings, opera masks, and traditional Chinese clothing are available at the Gongmei Emporium. Many travelers enjoy buying traditional gold and copper jewellery here as well. There are shopping malls in the Chongwen, Xicheng and Xuanwu districts where visitors can buy just about anything, and many are open all day. The Lao She Tea House in Xuanwu is a wildly popular spot for tourists who want to experience traditional Chinese teas, folk art and performances. Those interested in less traditional entertainment like night-clubs might enjoy a pub-crawl through Sanlitun Bar Street in the Chaoyang district. This is only a small selection of the attractions, of course. There is no end to the list of enjoyable activities and breathtaking sites of ancient Beijing, China.
