Arriving in Abu Dhabi

Cheap flights to Abu Dhabi depart from London Heathrow Airport and Manchester Airport. Flights to Abu Dhabi will arrive at Abu Dhabi International Airport. UK citizens will receive a visa upon arrival at the airport. The route 901 bus operates frequent services between the airport and city centre. The bus is available from the bus stops outside all three terminals. Metered taxis can be hired from taxi ranks outside all three terminals.

Getting Around Abu Dhabi

Taxis are almost ubiquitous within Abu Dhabi city centre, and are probably the most efficient method of getting around the city. Simply flag one down, or book one ahead of time. The Abu Dhabi Department of Transport operates a small and relatively new network of buses around the city. Bear in mind that the front seats are usually reserves for female passengers. It costs DHS. 1 for a single ticket and DHS. 3 for a one day pass. An OJRA bus pass is recommended for those intending on travelling more often. Check the OJRA website for maps, timetables and other information.

Main Attractions

Escape the heat by strolling along the Corniche, Abu Dhabi’s spectacular waterfront. There are several beaches along the waterfront, playgrounds and even bandstands for live music performances. Visit the massive Sheikh Zayed Mosque and marvel in its ornate interior. The enormous mosque is home to extravagant chandeliers, intricately decorated columns as well as the ‘World’s Largest Carpet’. Enjoy a glimpse into Abu Dhabi’s past at the Heritage Village. The village offers insights into the Bedouin lifestyle, and has a number of workshops displaying traditional crafts. Locals and visitors alike flock to lush Khalifa Park to cool down or enjoy a day out with the family. Explore the grounds with the aid of a miniature railway, or cool off at the Murjan Splash Park.

Shopping, Dining and Nightlife

Abu Dhabi is a shopper’s haven. The Al Wahda Mall is a shiny, modern shopping centre with plenty of high-end stores, and a large food court. Homesick visitors can head to Khalidiyah Mall , where high street favourite Debenhams and BHS can be found. The bustling souks are a great place to mingle with locals, and canny visitors may also pick up some bargains. Restaurants in Abu Dhabi cater to a wide range of tastes. Visit Al Dhafra Restaurant to enjoy a cruise as well as traditional Emirati cuisine. Most of the city’s nightlife can be found within its hotels. Hemingway’s at the Hilton has a good choice of entertainment, with a nightclub, a jazz venue and a restaurant with occasional live music.
