Arriving in Cayo Coco

Jardines del Rey Airport is located on the Cuban island of Cayo Coco. It started operating at the end of 2002, replacing the Cayo Coco Airport for international flights. This has made getting cheap flights to Cayo Coco much easier, and the airport is closer to the tourist areas of the island as well. It is not a particularly large airport and facilities are fairly basic. There are a couple of VIP lounges, a bank office, two duty free shops, a snack bar and a restaurant. There is no regular bus service but the local hotels provide coaches to the various resorts. Taxis are also available for hire.

Getting Around Cayo Coco

The island of Cayo Coco is principally used for tourism, with a very limited travel infrastructure. Most Cubans live on the mainland and get to the island via a large causeway. The hotels provide coaches in order to travel to the nearby resorts. You can also hire cars from the main hotels. These have distinctive blue number plates. As hardly any locals use cars, driving around is easy and safe after your Cayo Coco flights have landed. As the island is not particularly large you can walk to most places anyway. You can also have trips on horses around the island as well.

Cayo Coco Attractions

The principal attraction of the island is the beach. There are miles of sandy white beaches and various activities connected to the ocean. Diving is popular here, and an international diving centre even offers certified programs, with a range of diving packages to choose from. There is a large coral reef for divers to explore off the north coast. There are catamaran trips available that will take you around the island, with stops for snorkeling and relaxing on remote beaches. The beaches, such as El Senador Beach, are fairly isolated from the local population and provide a relaxing experience after your flights to Cayo Coco have transported you to this island paradise.

Best Shopping, Dining and Nightlife in Cayo Coco

There is not really much shopping available on the island. There are a few shops around the hotels but if you want anything more you will have to visit the mainland. There is a cigar shop, Cigar Lounge, where you can purchase a wide selection of cigars either as singles or in wooden boxes. They also provide a cigar rolling session for interested tourists. La Cueva Del Jabali is an interesting disco located in a cave, which makes for a novel experience. There is a good selection of music and usually a live band as well. Most of the restaurants are located in the hotel resorts and are usually inclusive for guests. If you want a relaxing holiday on beautiful beaches then an airfare to Cayo Coco is definitely worthwhile.
