Arriving in Bogota

The El Dorado International Airport is around 10 miles northwest of Bogota city centre. It is the third largest airport in South America with nearly 20 million passengers a year. Bogota has reinvented itself with a widespread publicity campaign to attract tourists and much needed improvements to the infrastructure and safety of the city. This means cheap flights to Bogota should be readily available. It has reasonably good facilities with restaurants, cash machines and free Wi-Fi. Taxis are available to take you to the city centre and hotels.

Getting Around Bogota

Lots of tourists use taxis to get around Bogota and the surrounding area. The old town, 'La Candelaria', is small enough to walk around on foot. The Transmilenio is a bus system that has its own special fast lanes enabling the buses to get around quickly and efficiently. The bus stops are self-contained which makes travelling safe and secure and there are over 1000 buses in the fleet. Some people even consider the bus service as a tourist attraction in itself. It started running in 2010, which means there will be no problems with transportation after your flights to Bogota have arrived.

Bogota Attractions

The José Celestino Mutis botanical garden is a well-visited tourist hotspot. The old town district of La Candelaria has many small shops and old churches. It includes the Gold Museum that contains over 55 thousand pieces including rare artefacts, all made from gold. It also has emeralds on display, as well as great historical information about the country of Colombia. An airfare to Bogota seems a small trifle compared to all this gold on display. An interesting and beautiful tour out of the city goes to Laguna de Guatavita, about an hour away. The scenery there is stunning and you will also learn about the customs of the Native American (Muisca) people of this area.

Best Shopping, Dining and Nightlife in Bogota

As the capital city of Colombia there are plenty of shops and malls around. The Andino Mall is a modern shopping centre in the north of the city. If you are looking for arts and crafts from the region then the Herencias shop has a wide variety available. There are also many places to go to during the evening. Some people consider 'Cinema' to be the best nightclub in Bogota. If you are looking for a pub then you could try London Calling, which is an English-themed pub with a wide selection of imported beers as well as beer from its own brewery. After your Bogota flights have arrived, you will want to sample the local cuisine at places like the Tapas Macarena, which offers a great selection of tapas.
