A small garden in the atlantic with good hotels, friendly people, cheap dining out and no lager louts!
A spectaular setting combined with friendly staff and good food make this hotel one of the best. The gardens are amazing and with several pools (indoor and outdoor) a jacuzzi and sauna, as well as a first class gym, there is no reason to return home bigger than when you arrived! The hotel has its own bus service to down town Funchal and in the warm weather and hilly geography, this is very welcome. Children are well catered for with a crech and well equipped play area and the lido is only a very easy walk of a couple of hundred yards from the hotel. Porto Mare shares its facilities with its sister hotel Eden Mar. Guests in either hotel can share the facilities of the other. Both offer first class accomodation and most rooms have a small kitchenette should you want to give the many closeby restaurants a miss on the odd evening. All in all I believe that if you decide to stay in Porto Mare you will not be disapointed and like me, you will return year after year.
Situated about 1k out of the main Funchal center, Mon Lido is a very comfortable hotel that will suit many people. The staff are friendly and the food is good. The hotel swimming pool is situated, unusually, on the first floor overlooking a busy road. Don't let this put you off though as once you are on the sunbed it doesn't matter as traffic noise is minimal. There is a wide variety of local bus stops close to the hotel and a car hire place right next door. The bar is comfortable and there is entertainment most evenings. There are many restaurants close by to suit all tastes, for example a Chinese and an Itallian are both within yards of the hotel entrance and many others, including an Indian, just over the road. Just round the corner there is another restaurant, Sola D Judah (spelt wrong I expect) where you can sample their spectacular Steak on the stone! Also within easy reach of the hotel, the Lido is very popular for its access into the sea for swimming and pleasant snack bars. To summarise, the Monumental Lido is a very pleasant 3 star hotel which you will find is more than adequate for a good holiday.
This hotel is popular with couples seeking active holidays that include health-club activities as well as leisurely sunbathing, The Ocean Park has a spectacular two-storey panoramic window wall in the marble lobby, offering views of the pool terrace five storeys below, and the ocean beyond. I found the hotel to be good but I was unable to discover why it had earned a 5 star rating. The accomodation is very comfortable and the grounds very pleasant. The pool area overlooks the sea and has a family pool and a children's pool. Aqua aerobics classes take place in the heated indoor pool, part of the complimentary health club with fitness centre, sauna, steam room, turbo shower, and spa tub. The Thalassothys Spa offers treatments and beauty services. Food wise, well it was OK - no more than that when we stayed there. I found the front of the hotel to be its worst feature, reminding me of a modern glass office block rather than a first class hotel, however, this is only my subjective opinion. The hotel is a short walk from the popular Lido, with its access to the sea and alos closeby are many restaurants. The hotel provides a coach into and out of the main center of Funchal. I enjoyed my stay at Ocean park but when compared with, for example the 4 star Porto Mare, I know where I would rather be!
