  • 1. Cross-island Track

The treck across Rarotonga's mountainous heart, via the 413m Te Rua Manga (the Needle), is the most popular walk on the island. It is better if you hire a local guide who can explain about the birds, plants and history of the island and teach you how the locals open a coconut! It's important that you do the walk in a north-south direction, as the chances of taking a wrong turn are far greater if you try it from the other direction. The trail can be hard to follow in some places and maybe you'll get lost!. It's also very slippery, and therefore dangerous if there's been wet weather. You'll need good, sturdy shoes, drinking water and emergency supplies of mosquito repellent. The track starts from Avatiu harbour and takes off from the end of the vehicle road (for this is better if you arrange the transport with a guided group). The track climbs steeply all the way to the Needle, about 45 min walk. At the first sight of the Needle you can admire the view from both sides of the island. In the end of the treck you can enjoy Wigmore's waterfall.
