In Love With Keuka

26 Oct 2007  My hometown

Keuka Lake is one of the Finger Lakes in Western NY state. It lies between Canandaigua lake to the NW and Seneca Lake to the East. The lake has towns at it's major points, Hammondsport in the south, Branchport on the north West and PenYan at the North East. There are many things to do around the lake amongst the most popular is the Finger Lakes Wine Trail. Fall is a beautiful time of year to visit Keuka it is usually the best time for a wine tour too. This list has some things to do and see while you are there.

  • 1. Hunt Country Vineyards

Great winery in branchport! Hunt Country gives tours and wine tastings. They also sell cheeses and gifts. I reccommend the semi dry reisling! It is just fabulous. They are located up Italy Hill road from the four corners, about a mile on the left. Please check their website for hours.

  • 2. 10,000 Delights Bed and Breakfast

This is a fabulous B&B! The food is wonderful and there are many surprises like a Japanese glass bottom tea house set atop of a gorge with a waterfall below. Inside you can relax to the sound of rushing water and read the journals that guests have written in about their haunted experiences. There is also a magical pond area, a Treehouse where you can look out over the side of the hill and lake and a celtic walking maze. The original house was built in 1750 and served as a boarding house for travellers on their way up the chain of lakes. It has an incredibly interesting history and it is haunted. There are 7 rooms (if memory serves) and a wonderful porch to sit out on. The inn Keeper is a very kind lady named Vera. It is a little hard to fine and I think it closes for the winter in early Nov. Located at 16414 W. Lake Road, Branchport, NY 14418. Call for details and rates. 607 868-3731 This place is priced fairly and definately worth the stay!!!!!!! I stayed in the "Yellow Rose Room" I had some very interesting experiences and visitors that night.

  • 3. Keuka Korner

Keuka Korner is the corner store, Diner, Icecream and bait shop. The food is Good, and you can always find an old timer willing to give you gossip, fishing tips or talk about the weather. They have hand dipped ice cream which is a nice treat after a beautiful day on the water. A lot of the lodgings around the lake are efficiencies or cabins so this is a great place to pick up staples without driving into Penn Yan. Definately grab a sausage muffin for breakfast before hitting the 'ol fishing hole in the morning.

  • 4. The Esperanza Mansion

The esperanza mansion looms high above the point of the Branchport side of the lake. It has been many things over the years but always beautiful. It served as a mink farm at one point and was a stop on the underground railroad. The house was owned by a distant relative of mine at one point in time. New owners completely restored it a few years back and added a building to the right for accomodations in addition to the rooms in the main house. They have a full service bar and restaurant with wonderful food and the view from the porch is unrivaled. Don't miss an opportunity for lunch and the view from the porch!
