Canadian Theatre With Panache!

9 May 2008  I travel to both places every spring, to celebrate my birthday!

The Stratford Shakespeare Festival and the Niagara-on-the-Lake Shaw Festival are great for theatre, but there is much more to these deliciously deceptive towns.

  • 1. Family and Company (Toy Store)

If you like Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, this place is for you. Employees are paid to actively play with science toys, magic tricks, juggling circus toys, dress up clothes, and magnets. Everyone is encouraged to join in games and play, and while the kiddies shop, mum can enjoy a French soda at the tropical soda bar.

  • 2. Stratford Costume Warehouse Tour

Go behind the scenes of the last season's plays, hold props, try on ruffs and robes, sit on Cleopatra's throne, face down the jaberwocky, wander through rows of wigs and oceans of bejeweled slippers, take lots of pictures, too!

  • 3. Wolfgang Puck's Restaurant

A 10 minute drive from the quiet, scenic beauty of Niagara's wine country is Niagara Falls, which may be loud and neon, but has some amazing food. This is simply the best restaurant in the region, for the money (budget traveler speaking!).

  • 4. Lords and ladies (Costumes/Medievil Clothing+ jewlery for sale)

If theatre inspires you to do a little dressing up of your own, this place is for you. Slip on a velvet cloak, a bodice or a lace-up shirt, deck tourself out with a Celtic brooch and a pair of antique gloves, and go for a stroll by the river, with the swans, or sit in a cafe and indulge in some sinfully rich cake (William's Coffee Pub)

  • 5. Greaves James and Marmalades

The best jellies in the world, plus sparkling elderflower presses. real maple syrup, and succulent sweets.

  • 6. Reif Estate Winery
    Reif Estate Winery, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

Some B&B's offer free tasting tours, and they are a blast. Pick up a bottle of ice wine, or my favorite, a second-pressing of the white ice wine grapes...sweet and delicious, without being overwhemingly sugary.
