  • 1. Kisaku Japanese Restaurant
Kisaku Japanese Restaurant, San Mateo, California

Consistently great sushi and sashimi as well as an extensive list of appetizers on the dinner menu (that they'll prepare at lunch if you ask) at great prices. Always check out their specials as well - the grilled duck is awesome and I once had a great egg and chive dish in dashi.

  • 2. Viognier
    Viognier, San Mateo, California

The executive chef of many years has just left, but I think the food should still be good. I love going to weekend brunch here - a three course affair plus a myriad of beverages and basket of fresh-baked goodies - for only $23.95 (last time I checked). Also a good place for foie gras and gourmet kobe hamburgers.

  • 3. The Dining Room
    All Spice, San Mateo, California

It is an extremely special treat to enjoy Chef Jon Sears' 7-course thematic tasting menu in the cozy little converted guest house that was once The Dining Room. Chef Sears is very passionate about what he does, and it shows up in the food presentation, flavors, service, and ambience (including decor, lighting and music). Check out his website at www.chefjonsears.com for more info on his dinners and catering.

  • 4. Left Bank San Mateo

This is a great place to go for simple French Bistro fare for lunch on a sunny San Mateo day. They have a large outdoor patio and items such as gnocchi with wild mushrooms and frisee salad with lardons and poached egg are very solid.

  • 5. Lure
    http://www.lurerestaurant.com

This new seafood bistro in the heart of downtown San Mateo is unlike any other restaurant in San Mateo - very cosmopolitan-chic, and very hip. The chef prepares seafood with new and exciting flavor profiles and combinations of taste and texture. Great place for a date, for girls' night out, or just for some great food. The french fries are a MUST-HAVE.

  • 6. Silver House Chinese Restaurant, San Mateo

Service is much better here if you speak Chinese, but the food still tastes the same, regardless - fantastic. Very authentic Chinese food. Great salt & pepper squid, shrimp-stuffed eggplant, razor clams, etc, etc., etc.

  • 7. El Nayarita Taqueria

The two best things about this taqueria: late night hours and super-yummy salsa verde. I can't tell whether they're open until around 2am, or if they never close at all, but after a late night working at my restaurant, I love being able to grab some carne asada tacos for $1.25 each.

  • 8. Amici's East Coast Pizzeria
Amici's East Coast Pizzeria, San Mateo, California

Thin-crust mini pizzas and soy cheese alternative available on any pizza. Great to go with at least one other person, so you can order two minis per person and have a pizza buffet. I love having variety and don't like to consume too much cheese, so I'm a sucker for this place.

  • 9. B St. Rotisserie

I just tried this new place (they opened Dec 2005) when I was searching for barbecue. They have good pork ribs in a nice and smoky sauce, and randomly - EXCELLENT reuben sandwiches! I don't even like rye, saurkraut OR swiss, but they grill everything to order and it's all melty-yummy-greasy surrounding really good corned beef.

  • 10. Bombay Garden Indian Restaurant

In my opinion, this is the quintessential Indian buffet. I love the lunch buffet's two rice options, their tandoori chicken, both their chicken curries, and especially the lamb curry. They have plenty of veggie items, as well, and on Fridays - to-die-for fish pakoras (these are even better when ordered off the menu). Also try the lamb-stuffed naan when ordering off the menu. Yum!
