If you are looking for a change and relaxation from your busy life of Mumbai then Pune is the right place to go to. You can even do a weekend if you don't have much time off. The Distance from Mumbai to Pune is about 170 -180 kms. The Mumbai - Pune Expressway is one of the best Highways and you can reach Pune within 3.5 hrs. On the Expressway there is a Food court and petrol pump in case you need to fill up your car's tank or your tummy!

The fresh air, the relaxed mood of the people and the food (specially the bakery stuff) keeps attracting me to Pune. I am a bit of a Foodie! We have an apartment in Pune, so we never stay at hotels.

There are a lot of staying options in Pune like budget hotels, paying guest, rented apartments, five star hotels etc. One can also go to Pune by train or bus. By Air is not advisable as the distance is quite less and the cost is high compared to train or bus.

My list is mainly about places I visited in Pune in Dec 2008.

  • 1. Snake Park at Katraj

A visit to the Pune Snake park is a must for nature and wildlife lovers. They have a variety of snakes and even animals like Tiger, leopard, bear, porcupines, monkeys, deers etc. They also have a lake and you can do some boating. When we visited Pune last in Dec 2008 they were renovating the park and adding more amenities.

  • 2. 100 Biryanis Restaurant near the Snake Park at Katraj

En route to the Snake Park we had lunch at this restaurant called 100 Biryanis. The food amazing and service was quick. They had a vast menu and their biryanis were just delicious and a good quantity of servings. They even have a bar section. I would definitely recommend this place.

  • 3. MG Road or Main Street

I would recommend you take a walk on Main Street; its the main shopping area / eating place of Pune. Even if you don't like to shop you can learn a lot about the city from here. You will find all kinds of shops on both sides of the street. Here you can get almost anything you need. I guarantee you wont come home empty handed. You will also find lots of restaurants on Main Street. Parallel to Main Street is East Street which also has numerous restaurants

  • 4. Marzorin and Pasteur at MG Road

Marzorin is one of the older snack shops / bakeries in Pune. We love this place for the sandwiches, coffees, juices and of course the bakery products. Right next to Marzorin is Pasteur which is my favorite place for Softies and Milk shakes

  • 5. The Place (Sizzler restaurant) at Moledina road

Very old Sizzler house having the best Sizzlers in Pune, do try their starters too with a chilled pint of beer!

  • 6. 11 East Street - London theme restaurant and pub at East Street

A whole street converted into a London theme restaurant and pub with a vast Multi cuisine menu. We had Ratatouille and English Fish and Chips, both were delicious. They have a Double Decker Red Bus which is converted into a Dessert Lounge! We loved the ambience and the food. I would definitely recommend this place

  • 7. German Bakery at Koregaon Park

Is a very popular joint to hang out and mostly crowded with Foreigners. It is quite packed on most days so you need to keep your eyes open to grab a table as soon as it gets free. It is a Self Service place so you need to order at the counter. Mostly if your order is big they will serve it to you at your table. It is a Vegetarian joint but serves Eggs. We like the Omelets, baked dishes, juices, desserts and the milkshakes here very much and we almost always drop in for a snack when we visit Pune

  • 8. Osho Ashram at Koregaon Park

Famous Ashram which is a prime attraction for Foreign tourists who are enthused with the ideologies of Rajneesh. You can go for a short guided tour of the place by paying a small fee. It is advisable to book one day in advance. Did not go inside as the tour was full for the day. There are a lot of meditation options which you can check out on the net.
On the road you will find lots of vendors selling footwear, Osho gowns and junk jewellery

  • 9. Aga Khan Palace - Yerawada

A historical monument where Mahatma Gandhi and his wife were imprisoned along with other leaders after he started the Quit India movement. In the year 1969, Prince Karim El Husseni, Aga Khan IV, donated this palace to the Government of India. Since it is closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi, it is also known by the name of Gandhi National Memorial. It houses the Samadhis of Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai and also a Museum

  • 10. E-Square Cinema and All Stir Fry Restaurant and Bar at University Road, Ganeshkhind

E-Square is one of the good theatres to watch films in Pune. In the same building there is the Gordon House Hotel which has a restaurant called All Stir Fry serving Cantonese, Chinese cuisine. The glass roof gives it a nice ambience. You can either order A La Carte or go for the 'All you can eat' Wok deal. We preferred to order A La Carte. The food was excellent

  • 11. Nandus Parathas - Dhole Patil Road

It is a small open air eatery, their Parathas are just out of the world. Do try their garlic chutney and dahi with the parathas and also try their lassi. When we went to Pune as teenagers and partied till late in the night we used to visit Nandus (which used to be open till 2-3 am) to have their delicious parathas. But now they shut by midnight

  • 12. Parvati Temple

It is situated at a height of approx 2000 feet above sea level and offers an aerial view of the city. It is a daily visiting place for many people; the 100 odd steps form part of their daily exercise. It is one of the most scenic locations in Pune
