Los Angeles with kids and without Disney

Ideas on stuff to do in LA that doesn't involve huge theme parks

  • 1. Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits
La Brea Tar Pits and Museum, Los Angeles, California

Great for kids and adults. I recommend walking around the park grounds to let the little ones burn off energy before hitting the museum. If the saber tooth tigers make you hungry, eat at the Marie Callendar restaurant just down the street.

  • 2. Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum
Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum, Los Angeles, California

There are actually a few kid-friendly museums clustered together in this section of Hollywood: Ripleys, Guiness and a wax museum. My kids only have the patience for one and they loved the Ripley's museum. Some of the scenes are a little gruesome, however.

  • 3. El Capital theater

A really cool movie theater in the heart of Hollywood. Shows kid-friendly movies in an ornate building, often with mini-musical preludes. I bought tickets in advance on-line and reserved front-row balcony seats, which was well worth the price. This is a nice, relaxing place to end an afternoon after visiting the nearby museums in Hollywood.

  • 4. Santa Monica Pier
Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, California

Great place to spend a morning or afternoon. You can walk the pier, catch some rides at the small amusement park, and walk, skate, or bike along the beach to Venice. We bought the unlimited ride bracelet and my kids rode the roller coaster 12 times in a row - if there are no crowds and no lines, it's worth it.

  • 5. Magicopolis
    Magicopolis, Santa Monica, California

This was the highlight of the trip -- a great magic store and magic store. My kids loved this place and you can combine it with the Santa Monica Pier for a really nice day in Santa Monica.

  • 6. Santa Monica
    Santa Monica, California

Check out the pedestrian shopping street downtown (about 1 block from Magicopolis).

  • 7. Marriott Los Angeles Downtown
The L.A. Hotel Downtown, Los Angeles, California

Nice hotel. There is not much to do downtown with kids but it is only a short drive (without traffic) up to Hollywood and the prices of hotels downtown are more reasonable than Hollywood.
