Puerto Rico adventures and culture weekend

4 Jun 2011  Getting out of New York for a few days
3.5 of 5 bubbles based on 1 vote

On a long holiday weekend, we flew to puerto rico and did some adventure, got a little culture and some sun

  • 1. Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa, a Wyndham Grand Resort
Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa, Rio Grande, Puerto Rico

A great resort, out of the way and not too touristy. If you plan to go to see some of the rest of the island, I suggest basing yourself out a little ways from San Juan and definitely rent a car. Don't believe all of the bad things that you hear about driving in PR. I didn't find it bad at all...but make sure you get a GPS.

  • 2. Acampa
Acampa Nature Adventure Tours, San Juan, Puerto Rico

Toro Negro Rainforest Waterfall and Zipline Adventure: If you are going to PR, a must-do is visit one of the rainforests. We chose to do this tour with Acampa, who is one of the top rated companies. Toro Negro was about an hour and a half out of san juan and really high up. Acampa has sole access to the area where they take you and the adventure is an excellent day. There's hiking, jumping in pools, climbing up a waterfall and six ziplines...plus a great lunch cooked by a local family. This is a great puerto rican experience.

  • 3. Old San Juan
Old San Juan, San Juan, Puerto Rico

Before going, I had heard some negative things from friends about San Juan. I am glad that I got to form my own opinion because I think it's a great old city with lots of history. The old san juan area is a very small section with lots of great stores, restaurants and forts.

  • 4. Flavors of San Juan Food and Culture Tours
Flavors of San Juan Food and Culture Tours, San Juan, Puerto Rico

This is a great introduction to some puerto rican culture. Leslie, the owner, knows all the right places to take you to for the best in local cuisine...plus she (and the other guides) is a book of knowledge about the city.

  • 5. Mini Boat Adventures
Mini Boat Adventures, Fajardo, Puerto Rico

Fun, fun, fun! Where else can you drive your own personal mini inflatable motor boats on a snorkeling tour that takes you to two different spots (a reef and a private island), all along being guided and taught about the fragile marine system by some very knowledgable guides. This is a great half-day adventure for water and nature lovers.

  • 6. Kayaking Puerto Rico Adventures, Inc.
Kayaking Puerto Rico, Fajardo, Puerto Rico

One of the biggest must-dos while in PR is to see the bio-bay. We did the two hour kayaking tour with kayaking puerto rico (there are many other companies, but they are the highest rated and with good reason). This should be on everyone's must-do list, as it's truly a strange natural phenomenon and while the guides explain the purpose of it and how important it is in the chain of life, you will be amazed. Though kayaking in the dark can be daunting for some, there are companies that go out in electric boats, too, I believe.
