The green behind the Gold

23 May 2006  The magnificent autumn weather here on the Gold Coast
3.0 of 5 stars based on 5 votes

Saturday begins with the Farmers Market in Mudgeeraba, where only the producers can sell their product. Farm fresh eggs, strawberries, wines, avocadoes, organic beef, mushrooms, all varieties of vegetables and fruits - even flowers - can be bought! Breakfast is a locally grown coffee, with a cheese and bratwurst roll. Yumm!
Stagger home, offload the produce, load up the picnic box and head for the Springbrook mountains behind the fabulous Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. Crystal clear water hurtles over the cliffs to sprinkle on the bushwalkers below, but I'm very much into a lunch time BBQ (with steak, onions and mushrooms from the markets), a bottle of local wine, a short walk and then a nap. The coolness of the evening (as we head into winter over here!) reminds me that it is time to go back down the mountain. We often stop by the "Best of All Lookout', where you can see as far away as Byron Bay. Truly spectacular and not to be missed. Then grab the two little dogs and take them for their daily walk around the 'block' (about 3km), feed the ducks and chooks, and then an extended session of 'play ball' with the two cattle dogs. It's now time to dig in for Saturday night. Dinner is usually something chinese or mediterranean (maybe a stir fry with couscous, rice or noodle) but always with an entree of fresh salmon sashimi, again from the markets. We are TV addicts on Saturday night, what with the local football (ie rugby league) and 'The Bill" - a long running police show from the BBC. I'm in and out of my book, while husband tactfully (not!) points out the refs blindness.
Sunday begins with our glorious autumn weather. Crisp clear mornings, brilliantly beautiful blue skies and fresh clean air. The morning consists of getting the roast and vegetables ready for lunch - this is family time, sharing with our daughter and her man, who live an hour away in Brisbane. Lunch is a long one, but always leaving time for an afternoon drive. Perhaps down to the beautiful Tweed Coast where you can see Mt Warning (named by Captain Cook on his first journey up the east coast of Australia) or up to The Spit - a narrow stretch of sand with the Pacific Ocean on one side and estuary on the other. The beach stretches both ways for ever! If there is an art exhibition on at Sanctuary Cove or at the Arts Centre or even up at North Tamborine, we will drop by to see what's happening. Then its sadly time to say goodbye to the weekend for another week.
