Shore excursion: Ashdod to Masada & the Dead Sea

More and more visitors to Israel are opting to arrive at our shores by sea rather than via Ben- Gurion Airport. The cruise lines often include stops at the ports of Haifa and Ashdod on their Eastern Mediterranean itineraries.

If you're ship stops at the port of Ashdod for two days rather than one, on the day you're not touring Jerusalem, I suggest you venture down to the Judean Desert for an unforgettable experience.

  • 1. Masada
Masada National Park, Masada, Northern District

Driving along the shores of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on the surface of the earth, you'll reach Herod the Great's spectacular mountain fortress of Masada. Ascend to the summit via cable car and tour the ruins of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

  • 2. Dead Sea Region
    Dead Sea Region, Israel

A visit to Israel is incomplete without the opportunity to float in the Dead Sea. For an upscale bathing experience, purchase a 'fun day' package at either the Crowne Plaza or Hod Hotel at Ein Boqeq. You'll have use of a private beach and spa facilities and enjoy a nice buffet lunch.

  • 3. Crowne Plaza Hotels Dead Sea
Crowne Plaza Dead Sea, Ein Bokek, Dead Sea Region

This is one of two good options for a really nice Dead Sea bathing experience and lunch.

  • 4. Hod Hamidbar Resort and Spa Hotel
Hod Hamidbar Resort and Spa Hotel, Ein Bokek, Dead Sea Region

And this is the second of two options for that nice Dead Sea bathing experience and the buffet lunch.

  • 5. Kfar Hanokdim
    Kfar Hanokdim, Arad, Southern District

If you still have energy after lunch and the Dead Sea, before you head back to port, you might (especially if you're a small group travelling together) head deep into the Judean Desert and embark upon a camel trek in the wilderness. End the afternoon sipping coffee in a Bedouin tent where your Bedouin host will share a bit about the modern lifestyle of these nomadic people.

A great place to do this is at Kfar Hanokdim, but reserve in advance: http://www.hanokdim.com/
