Sri Lanka in 4.5 days

21 Aug 2012  Sampling South/east Asia

Resources for executing a quick itinerary for blitzing Sri Lanka on a mid-range budget. Not for backpackers. Not sure how honeymooners/romantics can do this comfortably, because every bed I saw was a twin ...

  • 1. Private driver to meet you at CMB airport

Our driver was Mr. Upali Madigasekara at upalimmu@gmail.com. Wholeheartedly recommended. Aside from the first hotel, we let Upali negotiate all other guesthouses and we got good deals.

  • 2. Heritance Kandalama Hotel
    Heritance Kandalama, Dambulla, Central Province

A lovely place to shell out the "big bucks" for, especially if you've come in on a redeye and directly driven to Danbulla, and you really want a couple hours by the infinity pool to relax.

  • 3. Sigiriya
    Sigiriya, Central Province

Beautiful way to start a day! Read your tour book so you don't get too misinformed (by the local "tour guides") about the Lion Rock's history.

  • 4. Danbulla sights

Two other sights in Danbulla: The cave temples (give yourself 2 hours max), and the vegetable market. Helps if your driver has a hookup at the market.

  • 5. Kandy
    Kandy, Kandy District

Visit the Tooth Relic temple. Don't get your hopes too high about actually seeing the relic though! Good way to see an active, important Buddhist site.

  • 6. Grosvenor Hotel
Grosvenor Hotel, Nuwara Eliya, Central Province

Typical acceptable guesthouse! Happy to drop US$50 for double accommodation, twin beds, clean room, hot shower, breakfast included.

  • 7. Yala National Park
    Yala National Park, Sri Lanka

Our driver arranged a "private" safari from 2-6pm. We saw other vehicles crammed with passengers on uncomfortable-looking benches. You must hire a spotter at the park entrance. Worth it.

  • 8. Hotel Lake Side Tourist Inn
Hotel Lake Side Tourist Inn, Tissamaharama, Southern Province

Acceptable, again! Nice to have A/C. Good service. You won't have a view of the lake from your room (it's across a highway) so this is no "unexpected gem," but it's good value, solid service, and clean.

  • 9. Unawatuna
    Unawatuna, Galle District

Pretty beach. Was packed with locals on school holiday, which gave it a different vibe than just entitled expat backpackers lolling around. Take a tuk-tuk to Galle Fort for sunset and dinner!

  • 10. Sea View Guest House
Seaview Deepal Villa, Unawatuna, Galle District

This is a tricky one: there is one sign for Sea View (across from Kingfisher), but it leads to a property that is split in two, and managed separately by two brothers. We stayed at the back half (further from the sea). It was a solid experience. A/C, twin beds, hot water, clean.

  • 11. Kingfisher
    Kingfisher, Unawatuna, Galle District

YUM. Sit on the beach and have them bring you a cocktail and a big tuna steak with a salad. It's not super cheap but the food is quite well prepared, and the location is charming.

  • 12. Galle Face Hotel Restaurant
The Poolside Bar and Terrace, Colombo, Western Province

Swanky place to grab a pre-flight midday cocktail during a driving tour of Colombo on our last day. Adieu, Sri Lanka!
