If your planning a trip to Byron Bay in NSW [Australia] here are some of my recommendations to put on your 'to-do' list. Do yourself a huge favour and don't just stick to Byron Bay as the surrounding areas have a lot to offer.

  • 1. Cape Byron Lighthouse
Cape Byron Lighthouse, Byron Bay, Byron Shire

The views from the Cape Byron Lighthouse are spectacular, great photo opportunities. You can also do a bit of healthy walking to the various lookout points and down onto the foreshore below. There is a Cafe for a quick bite to eat, ice cream for the kids or coffee for the caffeine needy. It's cash only so take some pennies with you. Parking is available at various points along the way, so you can either make the journey up the road to the Lighthouse on foot or park in the carpark at the Lighthouse itself (costs $7 for an hour).

  • 2. Mullumbimby
    Mullumbimby, Byron Shire

Just a short 20-30 minute drive from Byron Bay is the town of Mullumbimby. This is certainly worth a visit. The town is hip, healthy and a happy place to browse and enjoy a meal break at any number of the great eateries. Lots of hip shops and a very nice feel to the place.

  • 3. Crystal Castle
Crystal Castle & Shambhala Gardens, Mullumbimby, Byron Shire

This is a wonderful attraction and quite extraordinary place. Allow yourself three or four hours to wander through the amazing gardens, boutiques and enjoy a bite to eat at the Cafe. Take your time - it's worth it.

  • 4. Bangalow
    Bangalow, Byron Shire

Bangalow is truley a gem of a town around 25 minutes drive from Byron Bay. The town is full of niche shops, galleries and great eateries. Would recommend visiting places like the Windhorse Gallery which have an extensive display of the work from Australian artisans.

  • 5. Lennox Head
    Lennox Head, New South Wales

Lennox Head is an interesting town with lots of wonderful eateries, a lake for watersports and excellent beaches.

  • 6. Suffolk Park
    Suffolk Park, Byron Bay

Suffolk park has Tallow Beach which is one of Byron's most spectacular beaches. Would recommend the Pizzeria and the Indian Curry for bites to eat. During the day has one of the Bay's most popular bakeries.
