Exploring the Margaret River Region

  • Category: Perfect weekend
  • 1. Visit a winery, or 20 or 30...

With over 100 wineries in the region wine tasting in Margaret River can be a bit daunting. We did our best to visit as many as possible, but had to settle for about six.

  • 2. Sample some mead...
    http://www.blackwoodmeadery.com/

Check out Blackwood Meadery in Kerridale, one of only two in the area. Here you can sample a unique assortment of mead wines and mead liqueur.

  • 3. Have a glass of wine (but of course!)

This IS wine country, so try out a nice glass of grape at the local wine bar, Winos. This is where I discovered Shiraz and I never looked back.

  • 4. Take a walk...

There is a great walk along the Margaret River via the 10 Mile Brook Dam Trail (17 km total, 3-4 hours). This is a nice, easy walk and a great introduction to some pretty incredible Australian birdlife.

  • 5. Have a beer...

Try out some good Australian honey wheat beer - Beez Neez - available at Winos, Margaret River Hotel pub and other establishments in the region.

  • 6. Sample some olive oil...

Try out the huge variety of organic estate pressed extra virgin olive oils at Olio Bello in Cowaramup. Be sure to also try some of their citrus pressed infused oils and gourmet condiments. If you're really lucky, they might even have some of their incredibly sweet organic mandarins for sale.

  • 7. Sample some local cheese...

Don't miss the cheese sampling at the Margaret River Dairy Company. Here we fell in love with the chili baked ricotta and the marinated feta. Buy of chunk of your favorite cheese, add a loaf of freshly baked French bread, a nice bottle of wine, and presto, dinner is served.

  • 8. Sample some chocolate...
    http://www.chocolatefactory.com.au/

No visit to Margaret River is complete without a stop at the Margaret River Chocolate Factory. Here you can sample the delicious chocolate, view chocolate being made, indulge in some delectable treats and load up on gifts to take home.

  • 9. Visit a lavender garden...
    http://www.capelavender.com.au/build_cafe.html

Not only is Cape Lavender home to one of the biggest lavender collections in Australia, but it's also great place to stop for lunch and to try out some boutique wines infused with lavender.

  • 10. Visit a gallery...
    http://www.woodbegood.com.au/

If sculpture and furniture is your thing, you'll love Wood Be Good. Here you'll find some elaborate one-of-a-kind pieces made from Australian hardwoods.

  • 11. Time for another beer...
    http://www.bootlegbrewery.com.au/

Beer lovers won't want to miss Bootleg Brewery, where you can purchase a beer sampler to enjoy at a picnic table behind the brewery. They also have a restaurant and house a small art gallery upstairs.

  • 12. Eat a kebab...

We're big fans of the kebab and we absolutely loved Kappadokia Turkish Kebabs in Margaret River. So much so that we ate here three times in three days.
