How a good time was had by all in Sebastopol - even the dogs!

  • Category: Walking tour
  • Traveler type: Culture, Shopping, Active/Outdoors, Sports buffs
  • Appeals to: Families with small children, Budget travellers , Active/adventure, Tourists, Pet owners
  • Seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall
  • 1. Ragle Ranch Regional Park

Ragle Ranch is one of Sonoma County's regional parks. It includes a Dog Park for off-leash dog exercise, playgrounds, soccer fields, tennis courts, volleyball, softball fields, and miles of hiking trails through woodlands, grasslands, and wetlands. (Caution: it gets VERY wet for about 10 weeks in the middle of winter!) $4 parking fee, some parking also available on streets near the park entrance.

  • 2. Sebastopol Farmer's Market

Farmer's market in the Plaza, Sebastopol. Sunday 10-1:30, April through December. A good selection of produce, bread, honey, flowers, live plants, and other items. Across the street from a Whole Foods Market: anything you can't get at the Farmer's Market, go over and buy from Whole Foods!

  • 3. Thursday Night Plaza Performances, Sebastopol

Outdoors in the Plaza, Sebastopol. Music performed from 6-8 pm, June 22-August 3, 2006. Children's activities from 6-6:30 pm, including facepainting, bubbles, circus arts. Call Sebastopol Center for the Arts at 829-4797 for upcoming performances.

  • 4. Ace-In-The-Hole Pub: good drinks, yummy food

Ace-In-The-Hole Pub, Hwy 116 and Graton Rd., Sebastopol, CA 95472. 829-1223. Cider pub with great casual menu. Indoor and patio seating. Live entertainment (upcoming: Mark McLay & the Dust Devils - rock & roll) Thursdays-Saturdays 6-9 p.m. I've seen dogs (and kids) hanging out happily on the patio during the live music shows - very casual, laid-back place! Note: this is NOT walking distance from town, although it is close to a bike trail.

  • 5. Trails in the Laguna de Santa Rosa area

A variety of hiking trails are available near Sebastopol in the Laguna area. When it is soggy everywhere else, park near Analy High School (6950 Analy Ave., Sebastopol, CA 95472) and take the Joe Rodota Trail west towards 116. The paved trail climbs gradually between High School Road and the 116 crossing. This can also be a nice walk when it is hot since the first 3/4 mile is shaded. If you have an older or really furry dog, this is a not-too-difficult short summertime walk. On-leash only.

  • 6. Grateful Bagel - breakfast or lunch stop.

Grateful Bagel 300 S. Main St., Sebastopol. 707.829.5220. Consistently excellent. Tiny deli next to the Post Office. Several indoor tables and some picnic tables outdoors. Recently added a GIANT chess set outdoors - what could be better, bagels and chess! Also serves incredibly good sandwiches made on bagels. I don't know if I love the salmon or the vegetarian more... always good choices!

  • 7. D's Diner - Yes, you could get a Hot Dog!

D'S DINER 7260 Healdsburg Ave., Sebastopol. 707.829.8080. Old-fashioned burger spot. I don't eat this stuff myself... but my son LOVES the garlic fries! A few outdoor seats available, or get it to go and walk to Ives Park or SuperPlayground in Libby Park.

  • 8. Local Pet Store - for treats and other goodies

Sebastopol Pet Center 618 Gravenstein Hwy. N., Sebastopol. 707.823.5749. Wonderful local pet store has resident cats snoozing on the carpeted cat furniture, an assortment of exotic birds with a lot to say, and the rest of the feathery, finny, furry, or scaly types.
