Romantic Monterey for Couples

8 Sep 2006  Loved it so much that I moved here and got married
4.0 of 5 stars based on 8 votes

Activities and Hotels for a couple to enjoy during their trip to Monterey

  • Category: Best of
  • 1. Monterey State Beach / Del Monte Beach

People who travel to the area for the first time often overlook the fact that the Monterey area has so many beautiful, uncrowded beaches. Unlike certain California destinations where you have to fight for a spot, there is always a big piece of private sand reserved just for you. Great for a picnic lunch, a stroll along the water's edge or just relaxing with each other and listening to the water roll up onto the shore.

  • 2. Romantic Beach Bonfire

Very few places seem to allow legal bonfires anymore. On the Monterey Peninsula, you can enjoy a bonfire on at least two different beaches. Romantic Room Designs, a local company dedicated to bringing out the most in your romantic travels, will set up a complete bonfire for two in Monterey (starting a roaring fire, message spelled out in rose petals, blankets, two dozen roses, smores supplies etc..) or out in Carmel. The best thing is that you can leave it as a surprise for your significant other. Just walk by the bonfire and say, "This is for you." Goes over very well -- a great memory.

  • 3. Romantic Dining in Monterey

This is one of those restaurants you reserve for a special occasion celebration. It is truly a dining experience and something you will remember for quite a while. The food is excellent, service friendly and accommodating, and the ocean views are magnificent. Since it is quite expensive, a few other Monterey romantic restaurants to check out include Epsilon (Greek), Cibo (Italian), and Montrio (California).

  • 4. Romantic Hotels

Most of the romantic inns and B&B's exist in Pacific Grove or Carmel. However, if you are staying in Monterey, the best bets are the Merritt House Inn, Monterey Hotel, Old Monterey Inn (B&B). The aforementioned company, Romantic Room Designs, can transform any type of room (even a Comfort Inn) into a romantic place to stay by decorating it prior to arrival with rose petals, candles, chocolates, flowers, romantic gift items etc.. Room rates vary by season with mid-week offering the best values. The Monterey Bay Lodge also has some really good value rooms with fireplaces that are within walking distance of town, the lake and the beach.

  • 5. Love Music

One of the nicer things to do in a relaxed enviornment like Monterey is to go somewhere and listen to some good music (and maybe dance a little). The best spots to just hang out and enjoy a glass of wine include the Cafe Monterey at the Hyatt Regency (live Jazz on weekends, fireplace, golf course views), Cibo (Calypso band, dimly lit bar with comfortable chairs), Jacks at the Portola Plaza (no music but almost a living room type setting with fireplace), Monterey Beach Hotel Lobby (live music, happy hour, great ocean views -- a little too lobbyish of an appeal but you can walk right out onto the beach afterwards).

  • 6. Romantic Room Design

This local company can turn any room in to a romantic getaway -- and I mean any room -- whether it is at a budget motel or a 4-star resort. They discuss with you your price parameters and what type of occasion that you are celebrating and help craft a great surprise for your significant other. When you open the door to your hotel room, you will be greeted with romantic items such as rose petals, candlelight, chocolates, champagne, romantic music. Designs can be done anywhere in Monterey County and can be done either prior to your arrival or upon returning from a romantic dinner.

  • 7. High End Monterey Romantic Hotel

If you are looking for an ocean front hotel with beautiful rooms that has all of the services of a major hotel, the Monterey Plaza is a great bet. They offer a full service spa (overlooks the ocean), health club, ocean-front dining, room service etc.. It is a larger hotel so it does not have the ambiance of a small B&B but the views are incredible.

  • 8. Picnic at the Park

There are a lot of great parks in the Monterey area to enjoy a picnic including Lovers Point Park (great name too) in Pacific Grove, San Carlos Beach and Park just off of Cannery Row, Windows on the Bay Park and Lake El Estero - both in Downtown Monterey.

  • 9. Mid-Range Romantic Inn in Monterey

This is a small inn that is right in downtown. If you really want to be downtown so that you can walk to some great romantic restaurants (Fresh Cream, Cibo, Montrio) and the ocean, this is worth checking out.
