Good food and lots to see (to work off all that good food!)

  • 2. PA State Capital and Gettysburg

It's a lovely building and modeled after the one in DC. Theodore Roosevelt even remarked that it was the most beautiful building he had seen! There's plenty of other things to do in the city - take a stroll along the waterfront or enjoy a meal on Second Street at one of the many restaurants. For the Civil War buff, the museum is located nearby in Resovoir Park and if you want to view the real battlefield, Gettysburg is just a short drive.

  • 3. PA Dutch Country

If you're looking for bucolic countryside and something out of the ordinary, take a trip to nearby Lancaster. Skip the tourist places on Route 30 to see another way of life, however, be aware that the Amish do not like their picture taken, so honor their customs and put the camera away. Be sure to stop at the historic inn in Strasburg, where you might be lucky enough to see some hot air balloon launching, and don't forget to stop for some ice cream on the corner of Route 896. For the shopper, there's lots of outlets on Route 30, although if you drive around first, you might decide to skip it because you want a simpler life and slower pace.
