Two Days in Cadaques

29 Dec 2006  Just like to explore really. Had been many years ago and wanted to rediscover Dali country.

We hope these ideas will help people visiting this arty-but-nice town. We went for 3 nights in December and struck extremely lucky with the weather. Good place for a winter break as not too crowded.

  • 1. Casa Nun Restaurant

Pretty blue and white restaurant. Good quality and excellent value set price menu incl wine, included three types of fresh fish, rabbit with allioli, chicken in garlic sauce, breadcrumb turkey breast with roquefort sauce (interesting). Only stray onto the a la carte if it's a special occasion as this will double the price of your meal. Friendly staff (headed by owner Paco). Located Placa del Port Ditxos on the way left, along the bay from the centre (Casino Bar) to Playa Sol Hotel which is currently being refurbished

  • 2. Bar l'Hostal

May have been 'the most beautiful place on earth' according to the great man and, for sure has plenty of gloomy character but DO NOT just wander in for a couple of beers, like we did, unless you want to come away 12 Euros poorer. Maybe OK and a bit more worth it when there's live music on.

  • 3. Restaurant Cap de Creus

Spent all day at this fantastic place just watching the sun go up and then down. Chris Little runs a popular restaurant with traditional dishes, including fresh fish as well as an interesting range of currys (for all you ex-pat Brits who are missing them). The natural park which surrounds this area is rugged and great (and popular) for walking/mountain biking. Even way out of season, when we went, we had to wait for a table. There are also appartments but we don't know what they're like - sorry. You need a car to get here from Cadaques (or anywhere else really).

  • 4. Dali Museum-House
    Dali Museum-House, Cadaques, Costa Brava

Came here years ago when the house was being just left derelict. Nice to have it open to walk around now. You have to get a ticket with a time-slot on it. Apparently you have to book well in advance in high season (another reason to come when it's quiet). It's a wonderful collection of 7 fisherman's (you work out where the apostrophe goes) houses which he made his home. Suitably wacky, we loved Gala's (his wife) dressing room which has an interesting acoustic effect. Multi-lingual guides give you interesting info and the tour is good value. Located at Port Lligat about 1.5 km from Cadaques; easily walkable.

  • 5. Hotel La Residencia
Hotel La Residencia, Cadaques, Costa Brava

We stayed here. Quite good, chock full of Dali stuff and run by (it seemed while we were there) suitably eccentric father and son. We've written a more comprehensive review in the hotels section.

  • 6. Dali Theatre-Museum (Teatro-Museo Dali)
Dali Theatre-Museum, Figueres, Province of Girona

What can you say. A must-see if you're not all Dali'd out by now. Says it all about the man. Fiqueras, large, unremarkable town which you have to drive to from Cadaques.
