Elena Z's City Tips

  • The city centre’s main attractions are all accessible on foot or by bicycle.
  • The city-bus number 100 takes you around the most important sights.
  • Buy a single daily transport ticket or a group ticket (for 3 - 5 people).
  • An alternative way to discover the city centre is a cruise along the Spree river.
  • Forget all the stereotypes about German perfection: Berlin is a city full of contradictions, and that's why everyone loves it!
  • 10% tip is usually expected in Germany when eating/drinking out.

    Elena Z Says:

Definitely one of Berlin’s iconic symbols, the former city gate survived many important events in German and world history, including being isolated for a long time by the Berlin Wall. Today, the gate hosts many kinds of cultural events and is visited everyday by thousands of tourists.

There are more than 2,500 public parks and gardens in Berlin, and almost a fifth of the city is covered with trees. But even among all that green, Tiergarten stands out. With more than 200 hectares, it is the second largest urban garden in Germany - and it’s not just a park either: Both inside and outside you can find many other interesting monuments, buildings and memorials.

Here it is, the German Parliament - only a short distance from Brandenburg gate and Tiergarten, the government headquarters is where lots of important decisions are made. The Reichstag Building itself is also famous for its glass dome - designed by British architect Norman Foster, it's one of the symbols of Berlin as the new German capital.

Berliners were allowed to cross the wall at specific checkpoints only, and Checkpoint Charlie is the most famous one of these. Nearby, you'll also find the Wall Museum, which tells the story of both the wall and the checkpoints.

An extensive old-town district that was completely renovated in 1993, Die Hackeschen Hoefe is today a residential and commercial complex, consisting of eight hidden courtyards with many shops, galleries and restaurants. It's a popular meeting place for party-goers, artists, and tourists, and there is still a strong influx of Jewish and French immigrants, giving the district a cosmopolitan diversity and artistic flair.

This ultramodern square is a prime example of "new” Berlin: Many famous architects, such as Renzo Piano, worked after the fall of Berlin’s wall to build this fancy new area, complete with skyscrapers, modern offices, shops and cinemas. You'll hardly believe that this square was once an urban desert-scape, divided by the wall in the '80s!
