Berlin has changed so much and often over the last decade, it's hardly possible to keep an actual track of what to do, what's already gone and where to go. BUT - apologies to all my American friends and readers - one thing won't change: you will not be able to capture the spin, the mood and feel of Berlin in a mere 2 days or so. Plan to stay for at least 4 days and you won't regret having crossed the waters. Enjoy Busy Berlin.

HajoL's City Tips

  • Most restaurants do have an English menu these days, just ask for it.
  • We call it the "German Service Desert": don't expect anybody doing/giving you a service to be EXTRA friendly / smiling / welcoming. They do their job. Full stop.
  • Tipping correctly in Germany is close to quantum physics: my personal basic rule: 10% is too much, 5% too little. My tip for easy calculation: half the VAT (17%) is just fine ;)
  • Not expect everyone in town to speak or understand English !! But, we're slowly getting there ... Always remember: visitors from North Korea are far worse off.
  • Getting around: public transportation is excellent: get your 1-, 2-, 3- or full-week-ticket from BVG. You can use all buses, metro.lines, streetcars. It's not even expensive!

Simply the City's as well as the Berlin republic's landmark. On your tour from the Bundestag via Pariser Platz strolling down Unter den Linden you are actually passing it anyway. Walk through from West to East and take a look to your right: there it is: the Embassy of the US. If looking to your left: French Embassy.

    • There's always crowds of tourists. Haven't heard of pickpockets. But beware of guys in bear costumes inviting you to take pictures: they'll demand their fare.

The roof terrace and dome of the Reichstag Building can be visited by members of the public, and offer spectacular views of the parliamentary and government district and Berlin’s sights. You actually WANT to go inside. Tickets have to be booked in advance and online via: https://visite.bundestag.de/BAPWeb/pages/createBookingRequest.jsf?lang=en

This used to be the hunting grounds of some Prussian kings. Even then they didn't like to travel much too far for their hobbies.... Especially during weekends you'll hang out with thousands of Berliners, grilling, playing soccer, Volleyball or Badminton, drinking beer and having a good time in the sunshine.

A gem a bit outside city center, but nevertheless more than worth it. You'll take the metro (U-Bahn) to Rathaus Steglitz and hopp into a bus going West. Enjoy the tropical garden houses. The easiness. The calm.

Welcome to fancy, artsy Kreuzberg. Over the years this part of Berlin has been taken over and transformed by generation of designer and software developer guys. One bar and restaurant next to the other. But still with lots of flair and charm.
