Frances V's City Tips

  • Be realistic, Venice receives millions of tourists every year, there are scammers. Keep your valuables close, do not accept anything from anyone unless you have asked for it.
  • Whenever you can walk, just walk. Venice is a walkable city, there are small bridges everywhere. It's ok to get lost, it's an island!
  • Boat tickets can be purchased at the airport in increments of 1 way, 1, day, 2, days, 3 days & 7 days. They must be validated before use. You may also buy them online at act.it
  • You can ride the boat straight from the airport into Venice, but if you take the bus to the train station then get on the boat it will save you some money.
  • If on a budget, look into renting a small apartment near a market that way you can cook and pack picnic lunches. Convents are also a safe alternative and may offer breakfast.
  • Doge's Palace tickets are also online but beware some expire within 30 days of purchase whether you use them or not.
  • Get your St. Mark's Basilica tickets online ahead of time.

The Vaporetto is your lifeline to the other islands. If you want to go to Lido, Murano, Burano, etc. you must take the Vaporetto their simply isn't another way.

The best way to see this is on the Vaporetto. Take the bus to the train station then the Vaporetto to your desired location and arrive through the Grand Canal, this is the best way to mingle with locals and see everything that's happening. It will also help you get your bearings on your new location.

It's easy to get "lost" here. The spices, the smells, the people, the language it's pretty much perfect. I loved getting our daily staples in this market. Local nonas come here, restaurant owners, moms, nuns, everyone comes here to shop. Just think of how long this market has been here. Marco Polo himself must've brought spices to this market, wow, I'm still in awe.

We love visiting churches, especially in Venice. They are peaceful and so full or art. The freezes are painted right on their walls, you can't take that art and put it in a museum, it was born there. It is specific for that place, it was made with that particular, community, people and place in mind.
