Shopping Guide for Verona

Since the beginning of time, art, music, sun, and gastronomy have placed Italy among the most significant nations on Earth in terms of tradition, beauty, and bohemian lifestyle. Nowadays, that list has expanded to include designer clothes, elegance, good taste, fashion opulence, and pervasive creativity — which have rendered Italy not just a touristic country par excellence, but also one of the most important shopping destinations on the planet. One of my favorite activities in Verona is people watching. Veronese people are rich and classy, and it shows. They dress well, eat good food, listen to good music, and wear fine perfumes. Today, we are about to embark on a journey to find out where the Veronese buy these wonderful items.

Dana B's City Tips

  • A really nice shopping center called “Le Corti Venete” is just outside Verona, to the south. Pay a visit; you could spend hours in there!
  • Profumeria Carlotta (Carlotta's Beauty Shop) sells exclusive perfumes and rare essences. This is the trendsetter for anything that smells good in Verona. The shop also carries some jewelry.
  • Alkimia is a famous multibrand boutique and was one of the first in Italy to have high-end designer names on its windows. Ladies will love it!
  • Tourism and shopping go hand in hand, so don't forget about all the beautiful sights around you — squeeze some of them into your shopping schedule!
  • If you love antiques, paintings, and collectibles, head to Corso Sant'Anastasia and the surrounding area. It's not far from the center!
  • You'll find the best deals during the Italian sales periods. These designated six-week sales take place in winter (starting in January) and summer (starting in July).

    Dana B Says:

Via Mazzini, the most fashionable street in Verona, houses posh shops and the biggest theater in town. Named for Giuseppe Mazzini, one of the most important people to have contributed to the unification of Italy, the street links the two major squares: Piazza Bra and Piazza delle Erbe. In this large pedestrian area, street artists will entertain you while you browse in luxurious shops. Although the mostly high-end shopping street may be a window-shopping-only area for many, there are serious discounts to be had if you come to Verona during the sales. A lot of shops also offer a discount just before the sales period, so put on a big smile and for a price reduction in view of the upcoming sales (note, though, that you can only do this a couple of days before the sales, not two weeks in advance).

    Tips
    • Should you wander into the back alleys, you might also discover some typical bars and pubs where you can quench your thirst or enjoy tasty Italian aperitivo.
    • Al Duca d’Aosta is the poshest shop around, with a collection of famous brands such as Burberry, Gucci, Givenchy, Ralph Lauren, and other chic names.
    • Try to take your eyes off all the elegant shops and look above you. You will see colorful windows, delightful window blinds, decorated balconies, and tasteful architecture.
    • Palma Outlet is a multibrand store that offers excellent prices for designer clothes. It is located two minutes away from the main street. Ask a local for directions!

If you love originality and unconventional clothing and accessories, then you will love the Riot Clothing Space. Simone Villa, a daring and creative designer from Milan, has made a lifestyle out of creating uniquely crafted street-style clothes to capture the personality of each buyer. The space, a mix of showroom and lab, fosters an exchange of creative ideas. According to Simone, fashion has nothing to do with gender or age, but only with the 'fit' factor.

Your nose will guide you to the amazingly elegant Piazza delle Erbe, with its imposing tower, lively cafes and bars, and brilliant frescoes on historic buildings. It's here that you'll find the widest selection of souvenirs, ranging from magnets and other trinkets to food, clothes, jewelry, and hats. Some of Verona’s oldest buildings are here, as this used to be the most important gathering place for the political and economic life of ancient times.

    • The square is really crowded at all times, so you might as well take your time. Linger and enjoy some fresh Italian fruits, and serenely choose your souvenirs from the hundreds available.
    • If you visit during autumn or winter, you can taste the most delicious roasted chestnuts prepared right in front of you. The smell is just amazing!
    • Since Piazza delle Erbe literally means 'herb market,' make sure you taste some local flavors from the vendors who adorn the square. Seasonal vegetables and fruit are present constantly.

Enoteca Zero7 boasts around 900 wine labels, which you can take home or enjoy in a pleasant atmosphere any time of the day. This place is perfect for spending an evening relishing various tastings of local cheeses and cold cuts alongside national and international wines. The Enoteca is also open for breakfast, but keep in mind that while it's not unusual in Verona to order something alcoholic early in the morning, it is considered a strange thing to order a cappuccino with any other meal except breakfast.

This ancient Roman gate dates back to the 1st century AD and is located very close to the city center, five minutes away from Piazza delle Erbe. Leading up to this impressive architectural landmark is Corso Porta Borsari, a refined and sophisticated display of boutiques and shops, from eminent designer names to hidden trendsetter gems. The gate used to be the city’s main entrance, and its modern name derives from the word 'bursarii,' the people who collected custom duties from anyone who entered the city for commercial purposes.

    • 'Borsa' means ‘bag’ in Italian and that’s where the 'bursarii' used to put all the money they collected from traders. Talk about Italian bags!
    • Look closely at the building to the left of the gate — you will see some preserved Roman walls that are still visible today.
    • Recharge your batteries in one of the gourmet restaurants, wine bars, and cafes along the Corso.
    • The multibrand boutique named 'Principe' has been here since 1936. You can find it at number 31 and you can choose from a lovely collection of bags and shoes, both for men and women.

Flea market lovers all over the world, unite! Every third Saturday of the month, Verona has its own flea market which takes place in the square in front of the beautiful Basilica of San Zeno. The church is an example of Romanesque architecture, and its work was completed in 1398. On the day of the market, you can find almost anything here: furniture, stamps, clothes, jewelry, even old cars and motorcycles.

Cappello Street, number 23, probably the most romantic address in the world, is the presumed former house of Giulietta Capuleti and favorite dating place for Romeo Montecchi. Today, the sewing house gift shop just next to Juliet's house is the place where you can buy the most customized items in town. The folks in 'Juliet's Club' (Club di Giulietta) can basically write whatever you want on almost anything you purchase. Heart-shaped pot holders, for example, can be embellished with your loved one’s name embroidered on them.
