I’m staying here on business. I wouldn’t ordinarily choose a hotel like this for work, however as it’s just for one night, thought I’d give it a go.

I paid £109 for my room. I was told on arrival breakfast started at 8am. When I said I’d be leaving before they refused do do my breakfast any earlier. It didn’t say on the website I booked re the times they serve breakfast, nor their own website and for what I paid for my room, I feel let down that they’ve refused to do anything about it.

The noise coming from the bar below was unbearable and when I asked to be moved, was told they have no other rooms available and had no earplugs when I asked.

Irons and ironing boards don’t come as standard in this hotel and the bathroom would still look dated in my dated great grand-mothers house (see pics)!

Also room 1 has a very low door-frame with the hotel being an ancient building. Rather annoying if you’re tall and, like in my case, they have no other rooms to move you to. If the room was appropriately priced, I may have stretched my score to a 2, however at this price, they’re the luckiest hotel in the country to even get the 1. Frustratingly, this you still can’t score hotels a zero as this well and truly deserves one at this price!

We stayed at Rhydspence Inn and we were very happy with our stay, I happened to book online and was so pleased I did as you could easily drive past, it offered all you would need for a pleasant and comfortable stay. It is 14th century with character and the bedrooms have been restored and redecorated, our room No 7 was large and had a beautiful view also a new bathroom, we have been travelling for 5 weeks and our room was up there with the best and I'm comparing with some great accommodation.

The owners are lovely and have really turned this place into a successful business. We had dinner which was really nice and a lovely breakfast the next morning.

If you want something with a little character at Hay-on-Wye this is the place.

Just a 5min drive to the township.

I stayed here for the 2nd time last night and it is now on the best place to stay when I am visiting Hay which is only 10 minutes away. Hosts Gerry (Geraldine) and Paul are very welcoming and will bend over backwards to ensure your stay is perfect. Firstly the building is just amazing, it is so old and crooked it sort of looks like a friendly haunted house! The bar is small and cosy with a huge log fire, there is a separate restaurant but once you have seen the fire the bar is where you want to be. My room had 2 single beds in and was immaculate, parts of the interior wall had been opened up and glass plates sealed over so you could see what the building was constructed of, so very interesting. If you are travelling as a couple, there are some fabulous bedrooms with 4 poster beds.

I was working in Monmouth on the evening I was due to arrive and I telephoned Gerry to say I may arrive after 9pm which is when they stop cooking, so could she put me a salad together for my late arrival. Here exact words were nobody goes to bed hungry here, I will make you some supper when you arrive. It turned out I arrived before 9 in the end and ended up with a lovely hot beef bourguignon and fresh vegetables. I chatted to some friendly locals and enjoyed my evening.

In the morning Gerry made my breakfast - I asked for bacon, egg and tomato and had an absolute plate full.

When I was ready to leave Gerry thanked me for my repeat business and took my credit card payment, which was very reasonable. I thanked her by making her life difficult after I forgot my pin number to my card! Eventually I got there.

Paul has not been too well recently but had managed to make a model of the Golden Hind in 3 days - not out of matchsticks or a kit, but using real wood, it was about 3 feet long. Amazing! It is sat in the bar on display.

Response from Paul A, Manager at Rhydspence Inn
Responded 27 Mar 2014
Dear Jackie, For a very busy lady, it is so kind of you to take the time to write such a comprehensive review. Thank you for the kind words, also for your help in your room , you really didn't need to, but it made me smile to see you stripped your own bed,( I always change the mattress covers as well, just teasing) Paul is poorly as you noted, your warmth and understanding made it feel like we had a friend to stay. There is something about the Rhydspence when we have guests like yourself and locals sharing the fire and conversation, theres a homely warmth that can be felt. Thank you again and we look forward to seeing you soon. best wishes Gerry

We are fortunate to live within fifteen minutes of this marvellous establishment, so are able to experience most of it's charms on a regular basis. The exception being the guest accommodation. Although, given the quality of real ales, wines, ciders etc. that are on offer, that could be a future possibility! We have dined in both the bar area and the stunning dining room where the food has been of the highest standard, with service to match. Mark and Lowri have created a charming, welcoming and friendly atmosphere where, both visitors and locals can feel equally at home. We thank them, and their team, for their generous hospitality and wish them continuing success. Andrew, Debs & Megan (the well-behaved sheepdog).
