Detailed Reviews
Myself and my wife decided to give this place a try and were so glad we did. The English/ Sri Lankan duo who own the place have clearly devoted a lot of time and care into creating the ambiance here. The mud houses are extremely well built and felt adventurous while at the same time being super comfortable. We stayed in a hut that overlooked a large expanse of jungle. All the huts felt surrounded by wildlife and spending time on the balcony relaxing to the hum of it in the background while peacock watching was an absolute highlight, (the whole area would be a bird spotters paradise btw). The whole experience was a much needed way of winding down after what had been quite a transient trip up until that point.
In every aspect really it felt the management had gone to the trouble to make this place a wonderful and relaxing experience- the food was among the best we had in Sri Lanka, there was a beautiful octagonal pagoda space which we used to practice yoga each morning, and Tom, (a very charming English bon viveur, and one of the owners), arranged for us to go on day trips. One day we went on a bike rides with a pic-nic and on another day a mini-hike up a colossal monolith looking out onto breathtaking views. All in all a highlight of our 4 week trip, we really hope to come back here.

First of all, it is important to say that it was HOT. 38deg C. I have a redhead skin, so this is absolutely not for me. Kumar, the cheery co-owner who rushed up on his bike when we arrived to guide us to our accommodation, apologised for the heat and said it was normally more like 32deg C at this time of year. I’d read the review that said there were no fans on site, and I was braced for sticky nights, but actually there were nice members of staff lugging electric fans wherever we went, so that took the edge off.
We were in the original Mudhouse, whose construction Kumar explained to us. It was quite cool inside at night with the thick mud walls and the said fans. I LOVED the outdoor shower area, whee we showered in cold water accompanied by various jungle creatures. There are hammocks and bean bags everywhere, as well as binoculars and bug spray, all useful. Talking of bugs, once dusk came there were critters EVERYWHERE! Frogs on the handles of the rooms and all over the loo, spiders on the walls, imperial pigeons stomping around our little courtyard. Fab. Definitely not for the squeamish though.
The heat did mean that we weren’t really able to take full advantage of the activities on offer. There is also some building and refurbishment work going on so things like yoga were off the table for now. But we did the early morning birdwatching walk with Ossi (pardon me for misspelling his name) our young and very talented wildlife guide, during which we spotted all manner of bird life. We also did a nocturnal walk and saw the grey slender loris, as well as mouse deer, nightjars and other fauna. Anil and Ossi were our guides, and Anil had an almost supernatural spotting ability! Martin did an early morning bike ride which he pronounced to be great, and I had a cookery lesson with Gunna. But what I liked best was lying in a hammock somewhere, listening to the sound of the wildlife, watching birds skid across the lake, kingfishers diving, peacocks howling ethereally, sitting in their trees with their impossibly impractical tails.
We had a tour of the area, where Kumar is doing something special, saw the ingredients which went into our curries, some really unexpected and unusual but very delicious - papaya curry, banana blossom and cashew curry were new on me. The farming is organic, and everything is done with an eye to conservation and biodiversity. We planted Mee tree #23 at the end of our stay.
Be aware that the luxury here comes from the way you are treated and not from the accommodation, which is rustic and natural. But the team really couldn’t have been more helpful, friendly or welcoming. We felt nurtured and welcomed. Great stay, heat notwithstanding.

My adult sons and I recently stayed at The Mudhouse for a family holiday and we were all very impressed with everything!
The accommodation was very comfortable, very clean and well maintained.
The staff were exceptional in their service and friendliness.
We had delicious food every single meal and loved the fact that much of the food was grown on the premises.
There was always plenty to do with personalized activities offered each day, we particularly loved our bike riding excursions to see the local sights. The guide for all the activities, Douglas, was funny, friendly and very knowledgeable.
I would not hesitate to recommend this place!

From the minute we arrived at the Mudhouse we knew it was special. Everyone was extremely welcoming and that didn’t stop for the five days we were here. Mahesh, Douglas and Duna the amazing chef gently guided us to wonderful experience after wonderful experience. From early morning birdwatching (what abundance!), a guided tour around this wonderful set up with its kitchen garden, amazing houses, ponds and native forest, swimming in the fresh water ponds, to cycling on the brilliant bone shaker bikes to the ancient rock temples near by, cooking lessons and night walks to spot the loris, roosting birds and night time animals. Even a trip to the atm was an adventure which took in roosting fruit bats, painted storks and close inspection of the fish and sweet corn sellers by the side of the road. We had the place virtually to ourselves and felt totally spoilt by the end of our stay. Such attention and care! Our house was huge and extremely clean and comfortable- but the tree frogs did like living in the loo and jumping from the sink making teeth brushing an excitement, giant snails, land monitors and Lucy the dog also added to the night time fun. Our four year old daughter loved it!
If we had our time in Sri Lanka over we would base ourselves entirely at the Mudhouse and take longer trips from there. It is a truly special place and one I am so grateful to have experienced. Thank you to everyone at the Mudhouse for taking such care of us and making our stay so special.

Went as a family of 3 (2 adults 1 child), with a family friend. (4 in total)
We stayed in the Maha Gedera hut, 4 sleeping beds and 2 day beds. Was a bit hot, but still cool enough for a relaxing sleep. Beds were comfy with mosquito nets around us. The hut was very large and had everything we needed, and more.
Food was very good, no menu but the food we were brought was very nice, and the chef asks you if you would like any other food than the things they bring you. 3 big meals a day, and after each meal, the chef asks you what time you would like the next meal.
The whole place is very nature themed, with not too much electricity, but enough that you can have wifi at the dining area, charge your devices and fans around the room.
Staff were brilliant, and probably the highlight of the stay. Owner was very kind, gave us a tour, and let us plant a tree when we were leaving. Chef was very nice and made delicious meals, other staff cleaned our room while we were out on activities.
Activities were brilliant, we went birdwatching, went on a night walk, two bike rides, and climbed a mountain to see a temple, with a brilliant view.
Whole experience was amazing, they tried their best to make it personalised for each of us, and the dogs and cats around the property were very friendly and happy.

What a little gem this place is. Located in the middle of nowhere on a small lake surrounded by forest and countryside!
The staff here are amazing, extremely attentive and very caring and accommodating towards our little 3 year old girl. They went out of their way to play with her and make her happy!
Be warned, it’s all in the name (the mudhouse). We were visited by a scorpion in night one (the staff helped us remove it with a broom!) you are somewhat exposed by hotel standards but then you get to see all kinds of nature and stay in a truly one of a kind location.
The food here is a highlight as is the scenery, it’s beautiful! Our only other comment is that life can be a little slow for a 3 year old so make sure you have something or you are prepared to keep them entertained.
Really really recommend staying here!

My visit to Mudhouse was an amazing experience. We stayed at Mahagedera, which was spacious with a unique setup. The dim lighting, fragrant atmosphere, and openness to the jungle were unforgettable. Walking on gravel roads, exploring organic farms, cycling, bird watching, and dining by the lake—all reflected the essence of sustainable eco-tourism. The food was delicious and authentic. Thank you, Mr. Kumar and the team—you’re doing a fabulous job. I look forward to visiting again.

No mains electricity so no fans or a/c, so boy was it hot! That said accommodation was great, food was authentic and staff willing to go the extra mile. We really enjoyed our stay in this remote but friendly place.
This is a picture of our accommodation, separate sleeping and sitting areas, open shower and loo, and dining area. Finally if you’re in to yoga this is for you.

The best aspect of the Mudhouse, apart from the amazing sustainablity acitivities, is the wonderful staff. We had a fantastic two-day stay - should have stayed longer. The welcome was amazing, the tour of the facility from xxx was very informative, the scenery incredible and the food out of this world. Our thanks to all, including Oshi, who provided us with a night walk, culminating in an unexpected sighting of a slender loris.
