We stayed in this friendly hostel for 2 weeks. The building is the old school house where Ernest Rutherford used to study so is full of character and history. Julie the manager is lovely as is the hostel cat Puss Puss! Rooms are good value, the facilities are clean and the common room is a comfy place to chill out.

The Rutherford Hostel was our favorite in Havelock. It has comfy beds a great common room, working laundry machine and dryer and very welcoming hosts. Sure it aged with dignity, but it was the schoolhouse of Ernest Rutherford NewZealands most famous scientist. It is regularly cleaned and to my total surprise most of the time not overfilled. Free WiFi although...

It's a beautiful and peaceful place to stay in in Havelock. It is big and it can host a lot of people, but at the same time it's quiet. All the hosted people and the managing staff and the owner are really friendly, welcoming and helpful. You can stay here and feel like beeing home. There's a big living room...

We booked and paid online using the YHA web site several weeks ahead only to find on arrival at 6.30pm that our booked room was no longer available and we were offered a small internal twin room without windows as all that was left. This is not the standard I would expect from a hostel operating under the YHA name....

Havelock is a great place to visit, but this YHA needs some money and a female touch. It has a run down feel and we avoided the kitchen and bathrooms as much as we could. Having said that, the manager is friendly and welcoming. With a bit of thought and a few dollars this place could be great.

We came across the Havelock YHA by chance, reading an old Lonely Planet guide. There is no mention of it in the YHA pamphlets we picked up on our way around the south island of NZ. This YHA is small and charming, being based in an old school house. The receptionist Brent is very warm and welcoming. We were offered...

Reasonable YHA within an old school house. The hosts were very helpful at arranging transport and accommodation for the Nydia Track; they actually run one of the I-sites in the village. Unfortunately the hostel felt a bit run-down and did not seem to attract so many guests. The kitchen was not as clean as it could be, but was ok.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
This Havelock hostel is no longer a YHA hostel. It is located at the mouth of the Pelorus Sound, in the South Island’s Marlborough Sounds. The old Havelock school has been converted into modern backpacker style accommodation and shares a name with the school’s most famous pupil, Baron Ernest Rutherford of Nelson, creator of modern atomic physics. Another famous student from the Havelock school was William Pickering, father of the NASA space program. ... more   less

“Arrive early if you have prebooked or ring to confirm arrival time. Beds in the main school house are the quietest -being furthest away from the road.”
